What do you FOBs think about the discrimination on the basis of accent? Have you ever felt it? Do you think that if you were an ABCD you would be treated somewhat differently? I am not saying that race prejudice doesn’t exist. It did at some time but in today’s America whites have acknowledged people of every colour as American as long as they can speak like them. But I think they still perceive you differently if you have an accent. I want to hear this from other FOBs what they think about this?
Re: Is it really your skin colour or your accent?
depends if you are in Jesusland or blue states ![]()
Re: Is it really your skin colour or your accent?
It all boils down to skin color, accents are not relevant......This was particularly true immediately after 9/11 and still is pervasive.....
Re: Is it really your skin colour or your accent?
Not a FOB or ABCD,
But my experience says,
The east coast, or the west coast dont really matter what color or what accent you have you are American.
Alaska, Hawai, No matter what your color or Accent, as long as You have money, you are GOD.
Southern and Black predominanant states, the darker the skin and the slower the drawl you are do able.
The Great Mid West, starting from may be Ok thru to AK TN KY etc etc, dont matter, if you not white you a monkey.
Re: Is it really your skin colour or your accent?
Actually I was more talking about day-to-day basis interaction with whites. I know that having an accent doesn’t disqualify for you to go to school or get a job in any part of US. But just on daily basis when you interact with whites at for e.g. banks, supermarkets and other places. Do they look down upon you or give you less attention?
Re: Is it really your skin colour or your accent?
Both accent and skin color determines how "natives" will perceive you.
My accent is completely Brit without any sign of Pakiness to it, northern to be precise, a bit like Amir Khan’s only more Mancunian and less Pakier and I’m not that dark neither and could easily pass for Italian or something but as soon as I introduce myself by my name or they find out my parents are from Pakistan, I notice the change in peoples look and tone as though I just puked all over them. There are a lot of decent people though who tell me I’m British (European) of Pakistani (South Asian) descent, something I don’t wholly agree with as I consider myself both British and Pakistani but I appreciate their good intentions.
