Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

through that romantic (in a sort of way) and legendary route starting from Nepal and travelling through south east asia, iran, turkey, greece and then western europe, terminating at London.

How difficult (or easy) is it for some one of Pakistani origin, holding a Canadian passport. This is something that has been a life long dream for me. I would even give my right hand (figure of speech :stuck_out_tongue: ) to have that opportunity once in my lifetime.

Anyone done that ???

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

Ofcourse it is, my dearest! Its the greatest experience any relationship can experience. It'll cost you a little, it'll take up alot of time, you'll run into a few scary situations, you'll hate being in some cities, but by the end but there is nothing that compares to traveling by road - even if it be a small trek.

It wont be difficult at all, especially with your Canadian passport. I'd recommend you find a suitable partner, atleast 15,000 dollars and think very very very hard about it. Change your route around a bit, maybe stick to a one or two continents...but if you're serious - start saving young.

If you need any details do ask, I just returned from a little trip of my own. I repeat, little.

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

First, it cant be a family trip if you mean with children. It would be insane to travel from Nepal to London with kids tagging along. Dont do it.

No matter how much you plan, and how far in advance you plan - you'll have troubles at borders. The more countries you cross, the more times you need a carnet de passage, the more times you'll be exploited by border guards aswell. Remember, these border are seldom used, and the border guards are poor and lonely. Bribes are common, so are delays at the borders.

From afghanistan to turkey, no matter if you travel through the balkans or if you go through arabia - you'll be scared for your life. Any history lesson will tell you why that particular leg wont be enjoyable.

In cities, things are not different. You're a south asian with an expendible income, visiting some of the most isolated and poor places in the world - you'll stick out like a sore thumb. Prices will be inflated, you'll be stalked, and the local police gangs will hound you to know why you're there. The locals at times wont be the most accomodating bunch. Some will, but for most of your trek they wont.

Think very hard about this. The trip itself will be rewarding, but the situations that come up - and they will - will be scary. There is nothing romantic about it. Adventerous? Yes, but not romantic. If you want romantic, stick to Dubai-London.
Skip nepal - iran for another trip.

Make sure you research repair shops, have lots of money set aside, and enough resources to rough it out for a month.

There are plenty of books, for the time being, read one. I'd suggest Adventure Capitalist by Jim Rogers

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

Yes its quite simple but times have changed and its quite dangerous to go through certain areas like afghanistan etc. Not just by bandits, but even by intelligence people who could accuse you of doing something your not (Almighty forbid). Insha'ALLAH all will go well, i mean i dont want to scare you from doing something ok, that you would like to do, i just wish for you and others to be careful Insha'ALLAH. Have a nice trip Insha'ALLAH. And send me the petrol bill lolz just kidding!

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

Watch Movie : RV

and then take a RV and travel to your destination :D

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

Driving from Nepal? Have you seen the mountain roads there (very narrow), a slight mistake and its a steep fall. Trucks & petrol tankers are constant and they have no regard to the person in a smaller vehicle.

India - I never drive there myself, its too stressful and dangereous. Roadsigns are a mess.

You will find (I think) the same problems in all the countries in Asia, along with
horrible food, lack of toilet facilities & No decent motel. If you have an accident or knock anyone down - the local people don't wait for the cops to come, they'll beat you senseless.

Never travel with family, NEVER, unless you are flying and have 5 star hotel accomodation in all the cities you visit in Asia.

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

listen dude...if you have cool 8 to 10 goof freindz...this journey of yours is going to be a lot of fun.....

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

yeah I can understand that…

the part about travelling with family through South East Asia and even the Iran / Turkey / Greece part. Family doesnt mean I am travelling with infants or toddlers… It would be a life time experience for them growing up dudes too…

So once you get to western europe - I mean cross over from Greece into Italy, it should be okay - right ?

So what I assume is that international travel by road is OKAY as long as you can compromise on skipping the Pak/Iran/Turkey/ and to some extent Greece part of the journey.

Nice feedback yar - really appreciate it :flower1:

Re: Is it possible nowadays to travel by car..

You can even start in Turkey, but as of right now everything to the east of Turkey is not safe.

A common route, if you REALLY want to start off in Pakistan is to Dubai or Oman, and then north towards turkey, onwards to Europe.

Skip Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria.
