Is it good to be over protective??

There are people who are over protective and possessive.. Especially certain parents are usually so over protective about their children.. They dont allow them to go alone anywhere and accompany them to all the places they go.. I am not only talking about parents of kids who are teenagers but also those who are in their mid 20’s.. If the parents cant accompany, they dont let the child also be independent to explore things..

Do you think is it good to be over protective?

No not at all.

Re: Is it good to be over protective??

Of course not. I think it causes children to feel suppressed past a certain age. We're meant to raise children so they can be independent and strong, know the difference between right/wrong without parents standing over their shoulders telling them. Being over-protective and not letting someone explore different things in life causes weakness in other areas, imo. They can't make decisions, from what I've seen. There's a healthy dose of being protective of your children and when you cross that line I think kids tend to go off the edge. ie) Doing the things their parents didn't let them, on their own or whatever else it was.

Re: Is it good to be over protective??

I belong to such a family. My parents have always been over protective. They never said "no" for going anywhere but they made sure they dropped & picked us up. They always knew where we siblings were going and who we were meeting. Initially, it used to annoy me but seeing what happened to my cousins/friends whose parents didn't care much & gave a lot of independence, I believe what they did was right. Of course, to an extreme extent is never good but to a reasonable level I don't mind any more.

Re: Is it good to be over protective??

I believe there are different levels of protectivness and should be implemented according to time/person/situation.

Personally my mum bless her has always been over protective with us in terms of where we go and what time we get and who we socielise with. This was not done because she had ample time on her hands and nothing better to do but because she didn't want her children to go asstray and instead be responsible members of society. It is the duty of every parent to make sure they bring their child up in the right way and if being over pretective of them then so be it.

Re: Is it good to be over protective??

I think there needs to be a balance, but being a first time mom I sometimes find it hard to let go of my son and let him run around and explore. But I have made a conscious effort to be more easy going.

As for my parents, I wouldn't call them over protective but we definitely had stricter rules then any of my friends.

Re: Is it good to be over protective??

My parents let us “THINK” we were pretty independent while keeping their eyes open like a hawk. :hehe:

Re: Is it good to be over protective??

I am "over protective" for my daughter that is what my parents tells me so. Well I am I love her more than anything and I don't want her to get hurt or harmed in anyway.
