Is it Fair?

I live and work in a muslim country.

During Ramadan, the work times are reduced for Muslims, from 8 per day to 5 per day, and for non-muslims from 8 per day to 7 per day.

Moreover, it is tried that muslim staff be accomodated during morning hours while, non-muslim staff given evening or night shifts.

I think despite this is not fair. We are portraying our religion in a wrong way. Fasting is a deed so personal between Allah and man. Such public display and discrimination is against the spirit of Islam.

Re: Is it Fair?

i dont get where the discrimination comes in...

Re: Is it Fair?

Ya, i think it is kind of discrimination. We all work here in west and nort america and its actually not hard to come to office while fasting and break up the fast while still at work. The only issue is numaz, and if you have a cabin you can offer it there or go to your car and offer it there if no mosque is close by.
Just my opinion.

Re: Is it Fair?

I think you people are spoiled. At least in Pakistan, the way people's lives are during Ramadan...I just can't believe they have it so easy. (I don't know what country you're in).

I gotta get up early in the morning. Gotta get to class. Gotta get up even earlier to do sehari, and then its pointless to go back to sleep - I'll miss class. so I study until class. Then I go to class. No skipping (unless extreme circumstance). Then I go to the library or wherever, and study. Then I break roza. Then I'm studying WHILE I'm eating. And then I don't go to bed any earlier either, because there is still much work to be done.

Yeah...

I'd like to see anyone arrange my shifts so that I can rest while I'm fasting. Its a dream.

Re: Is it Fair?

I don't think it's right to impose evening shifts upon non-Muslims. If anything they should be given an option and only those willing to switch be actually switched. If imposing is the way to go, then they should get overtime or something of that sort to accommodate them.

Re: Is it Fair?

lol i thin i shud work in ur country…cool idea…

Re: Is it Fair?

i think its fine.

Re: Is it Fair?

I agree with you brother totally ....I dont think the workhours should be reduced at all for muslims or nonmuslims

Re: Is it Fair?

Yeah. its kind of discrimination. Our fasting should have nothing to do with non-muslims. Why do they have to suffer??

I work in US. I've never asked for change in timings but my VP gave me permission to go home an hour earlier since I won't be eating and taking an hour of lunch break. I didn't even have to ask him.

Re: Is it Fair?

PCG people in pakistan work hard as well… next time you go there instead of observing just your lazy cousins .. try to go to main city and see what a life a 12 yr old kid has .. follow him from morning till night and then hopefully you will thank Allah for what you have.

You study so much clearly you are weak at it or something else is seriously wrong.. i have never studied this much ever! You sit once and study properly. I like ramadan because it lets me concentrate on my studies … since i am fasting i get to put my full attention to my study for 2 - 3 hours and then i pray and i enjoy my fast.

Please stop complaining about a good life that you have.

thanks

Re: Is it Fair?

i agree.

look at this: in the US jews take time off from work, when it is their religious holidays and/or they are fasting. so do christians.

we do it for a whole month. i see ur point that we have to do it thinking that we are personally doing it as a worship and self discipline form for Allah, for our own benefit.
demanding a right to equality and standing for someone else's right is a noble thing to do.
unless, non muslims in dubai are uncomfortable working extra hours during ramadan,

then it is fine for u to go home early a bit, since hopefully u are fasting.

it is a social contract of respecting each others' religious commitments. i also do not see a problem, with those muslims who would liek to stay at work, to be staying at work.
on a company level, who knows, ur hours are being cut, to not pay u the extra hours.
so u may want to check that with ur employer, and then if u do not mind working with the others, so go ahead and take the night shifts just like others, and work the regular hours.

i think, that way, neither u are feeling guilty, nor ur fellow workers will feel bad or unfairly given no time off during ramadan.

best,

dushwari

Re: Is it Fair?

in government institutes the timings r relaxed for all workers regardless of religion....

in some private companies, who already suffer by giving shorter working hours for muslims, u really cant complain if they keep non-muslims on regular hours....
after all the non-muslims dont have any reason to ask for shorter hours in ramadan....
its not just the fasting, the main reason is that ppl want to do extra ibadaat and they like to get some extra time for that....

and those who live in non-muslim contries and dont like hard time during ramadan - well pack ur bags and go back to the muslim country that u dumped....
