The biggest mistake the United States made after the occupation was disbanding the security infrastructure. This infrastructure could have been used to suppress people but the kind of apparatus they have put together is dysfunctional and far more brutal.** It will take a long time to evolve a functional, efficient and people-friendly security system.** It's not going to be easy.

Its not really a "mistake" ;) ... how else would you ensure your long stay if everything was peaceful after sudden removal of one regime and next one takes over without problems.
