Is folk music dying?

a few decades ago, we have singers like Reshma, Alan Faqir, Alam Lohar, Mai Baghi etc who sung many famous folk sngs in regional languages, but now we don’t find new folk singers and new songs. The new singers do clean their hands on the works of old singers, but they don’t own new stuff of their own.

Whats the reasons in declining folk music? Is our society leaving its roots by running behind loud music of west?

Re: Is folk music dying?

What is situation of folk music in India in the presence of bolly music in the shape of Munni Badnaam and Sheela ki jawani.

Re: Is folk music dying?

Isn't filmy music is new folk music though it lacks local legends but its popular so its also part of new folk music....:D

Muqawwee bhai i read somewhere that Tansen was classical king but his son was into folk music is that right?

Re: Is folk music dying?

folk music doesn't refer to popular music IMO. Folk music is one jis ko sun kar aap ko uss mitti se attachment feel ho and I don't think filmy music copied from west fulfill this criteria.

I kinda remember that Tansen had tussle with his son on something. May be thats due to reason you mentioned, because classical singers consider other forms of music very low
