Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

I looked up a few answers online that either prohibited eating with one’s left hand or disliked it.

Here are a few links:

Eating with the left hand

Having the habit of eating with one’s left hand

Eating or drinking with the left hand

I also submitted a question, which is in accord with what has been said above:

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Since we're talking about eating according to Islamic principles, I have heard that licking your fingers after you're done eating is also Sunnah. Is that true?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

^
yes, thats part of sunnah....

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

thank goodness mankind has advanced to the stage where napkins are now available to most.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

^if u dont 'like' or understand our practices, why can't u just avoid threads like these and just not say anything instead of being so insulting about it? what ever happened to tolerance?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

wow, people o yonder have napkins to lick?? hmmm, mankind is officially doomed.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

It’s not about liking, understanding, insulting or intolerance. I’m just higlighting the cultural practices of ancient societies that people want to believe have religious signifigance. If everyone is supposedly a Muslim and that is what God wants everyone to practice, I have every right to comment on it.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

well for us these ‘ancient practices’ do have religious significance. and every religion claims that their religion should be practiced by everyone in the world, whether it be christianity or hinduism, why is it different if muslims believe that as well?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Make no mistakes, i understand why eating with left hand is wrong in islam, it makes a clear distinction of using Left hand for not so clean practices and right hand for clean practices, i just need clarification on how bad a sin it is to eat with the left hand.

Perhaps i need to try harder to get used to making nawala's with my right hand.

Im not 100% lefty, i use left hand for certain things and right for others, forexample i write with my left hand but play sports with my right hand :) Confusing innit ?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Assalamualakum
Insh’Allah at times like this, always head straight to the quran and Hadith books

When a man ate with his left hand in his presence, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Eat with your right hand.” He said, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able to!” Nothing was stopping him but his stubborn arrogance, and he never raised his right hand to his mouth after that. (Reported by Muslim, 3776). According to a report narrated by al-Daarimi, “his right hand never reached his mouth”. This man suffered paralysis because of the du’aa’ of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

‘Aa’ishah and attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Whoever eats with his left hand, the Shaytaan eats with him.” (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, commentary on hadeeth 1721).

Hafsah (may Allaah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to use his right hand for eating, drinking and getting dressed and his left hand for everything else. (Reported by Abu Dawood, no. 30)

Moreover, the left hand should be reserved for removing dirt, as when cleaning oneself after going to the toilet (istinja’) and blowing one’s nose and other kinds of cleaning oneself and removing dirt. How can a person use that which is used for removing dirt and impurities for putting food in his mouth?

“This is a fixed rule in sharee’ah. It has to do with honourable things such as putting on one’s shirt, trousers and shoes, entering the mosque, using siwaak, applying kohl, … combing and styling one’s hair, … shaving the head, giving salaam at the end of prayer, washing oneself in ghusl or wudoo’, leaving the toilet, eating, drinking, shaking hands, acknowledging the Black Stone, and other things where we are encouraged to use the right hand or start with the right. As for the opposite [things that are not honourable], such as entering the toilet, leaving the mosque, blowing one’s nose, washing oneself after using the toilet, taking off one’s shirt, trousers and shoes, and so on, then we should start with the left or use the left hand. All of this has to do with honouring the right hand or right side.”

Some people may have a real problem that prevents them from using their right hand, such as being paralyzed and so on. In this case they are excused and there is no blame on them. Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:** “If he has an excuse for not eating and drinking with his right hand, such as sickness or an injury, then this is not makrooh…”

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Ok...you said that naturally if you are paralyzed then you are excused...does the Prophet say anything about those who are left handed?...

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Shaytan needs to eat food now? So Shaytan is a human being with hands and feet? I thought shaytan was a jinn, a completely different species from humans. Please post scientific evidence that jinns in fact do eat like humans.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

capitol, i am sure its not suppose to be taken literally.

anyhow, i dont think there is any ruling on left handed ppl. it is preferred to use right hand for eating n such i believe but not a definite written on the stone kind of ruling about it.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Ones who are left handed can still use there right hand. They must try extra hard to learn and remember to eat with their right hands!

If ones hand is paralyzed or broken he has an excuse Insh’Allah.

Are you denying the hadith? These are the words of our beloved prophet (peace be upon him) Allah alam what shatan looks like or what he can do. Insh’Allah I will search into this. “scientific evidence?” Brother have “scientist” ever seen shatan? I dont think so! In many hadiths. (Just because they are different than us, does not mean they dont have hands!) This is a hadith, and in many other hadiths I have read that shatans hand have been mentioned!

If this is not enough for you, I dont know what will be! Insh’Allah I will look into “shatans features” for you.

and like the one after you said “capitol, i am sure its not suppose to be taken literally.” isnt that possible? Allah knows best what shatan looks like… but what difference does that make

Allahu alam

and bro above me… we are not supposed to stay away from the ways of the shatan… so if this is how he is said to eat… do you think that is ok for us?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Many hadiths are weak and inauthentic, how are you so sure this is not one of them?

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Possibly because it has never been stated as weak…

Brother this is a well known hadith used by scholars all over the world! These have been used by the 4 great Imams! It is insh’Allah authentic!

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

it boils down to how much faith u have. do ur own research, lets see what u come up with to support ur argument.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

exactly! jazak Allahu kheirun bro suroor

and Capitol if you ahve anything to support yourself, please do post it… If not, you will insh’Allah know that you are wrong

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

I didn't have an argument to begin with, you all are getting your panties in a bunch. All I did was ask a question about jinns and shaitans and the riduculousness of them having eating habits like humans.

Re: Is eating with your left hand Haram?

Ok thats perfectly fine brother and Insh’Allah together we will all learn from each other and insh’Allah our deen will grow. The only reason I would call this an argument is that you said “Shaytan needs to eat food now?” as if people are making up stuff. At least thats how it seemed to me.

Allahu alam

Insh’Allah lets try not to say that things like this are “ridiculous”

jazak Allahu kheirun
