Lobster is NOT halal
As far as sea food is concerned, only that fish which has scales may be consumed. In addition, it must be alive when caught from the water. Crabs are not classified as fish and may not be consumed. There is some differences amongst certain ulama' regarding lobsters but the general consensus seems to be that it should not be consumed.

And what is the level of authenticity of this hadith? Did they know what lobsters and other shellfish were in those areas?

The reason why I say this is that the Quran manages to mention pig, but it leaves out crabs and lobsters.

they are makrooh ...i am making an assuption on that...
i consume crabs, lobsters, shrimp ...infact i love them...I will have to confirm whether they are haraam or not

I have seen crabs and shell fish being served in most middle eastern countries, as well as indoensia and Pakistan. That would not be possible if it was forbidden ouright.

They are haraam in hanafi fiqh, and makrooh in the other 3 sunni fiqhs, i'm pretty certain.

I’m absolutely sure they are haraam in hanafi fiqh. I’ve read that elsewhere. Non-hanafi scholars who’s opinions I have heard or read are split, with some saying they are makrooh and others that they are halal.

can u tell me which fiqah allows it so i convert to that fiqah when I go to have me a lobster.
this sort of knowledge is important, had i not converted to fiqah e jafaria on weekneds during college, i would be a very gunahgaar insaan. knowledge saved me.

According to Hanbali and Shafi fiqh, all living creatures found in the sea are halal, whether they are in the form of a fish or not. This includes oyster, , shrimp, lobster, shark, etc.
According to Maliki fiqh, every living creature of the sea is halal except eel.
According to Hanafi fiqh, only scaled fish are allowed.

Yes, double check it, because in Pakistan all Hanafies use fish which is without Scale - but Shias dont use.
I am not sure what else they use - like star fish with hundreds of legs and other sea foods like chinese.

See, if even the fiqhs are disagreeing over the level of haraam/maqrooh - there has got to be some problem in the picture!

nai bibi, ulema are fallible, and any ruling is merely an aalim's interpretation of Islam. diversity in rulings only reflects that different people have had different ways of looking at the same things.
honestly though, its quite hard to figure out which rulings to follow. i understand that shia's generally follow one particular aalim, and there isnt that much conflict in dietary laws.. but I live with mostly sunni friends, and have to deal with their eating issues everyday. and since a lot of this (scales/no scales, cheese/no cheese) isnt based on logic but differing traditions of contentious reliability and timing and abrogation, its quite hard for them to decide what to do.
i guess in the end u just have to pick one particular ruling and let your intentions account for the rest.
