Is Desi Ghee Really Bad for You?

I hear about ghee being sooooo bad but many people actually consider it to be healthier.

Does anyone still use it?

People like sweets made in desi ghee like Dil Pasand Mithai in Karachi which is very expensive but tasty.

Instead of using it in cooking - my mother used to put desi ghee on following things when cooked:

  1. Haray mash ki kitchri
  2. Basni roti
  3. Channa/Mash daal

I don't know how correct this is but my uncle's dr. recommended him to use desi ghee instead of oil. Ofcourse the quantity has to be reasonable.

I don't think ghee is bad it's just very costly as compared to oil and offcourse more fattening.

Ghee is not bad for you in moderation, but if you go frying whole batches of Gulab Jamun, there will be many health problems in your future.

nah pal, ghee and most animal fat has a ton of saturated fat, which is basically what is considered responsible for heart disease, high cholesterol levels etc. oils are usually lower in saturated fats than ghee/butter. as for fattening, both are the same in terms of calories. for a healthy cardiovascular system, you want to have most of the fat in your diet to come from mono or poly unsaturated fatty acids; not saturated fat.

however, ghee made from cows that are raised on grass, and not on a grain diet, have a lot more conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) than regular ghee, and has a lot of health benefits.

and dalda has a lot of trans fat. avoid at all cost.

New generation does not even like the smell of it. You have to be at least 80 years old if you like things made with desi ghee. :p

Even though I became a Vegan sometime back, Ghee is the only thing I haven’t given up. Having grown up eating ghee everyday (In moderation), I have never had any health/skin/hair problems since I was a child…(Could be due to Ghee or just a generic healthy eating lifestyle but I’d like to think it’s the former). However, when eating, I suggest you go with either homemade from organic milk (Or non GMO) or premade organic.. (Whole foods sells a good brand if you live in the US http://www.purityfarms.com/ or http://www.pureindianfoods.com/) Reviews: are various online that go in detail of how it helps in Digestion..etc and somehow, I believe Good digestion is key to healthy living. From personal experience I’d give it a Thumps up..!

Am I the only one here who feels like "this is so wrong" anytime I smell food being cooked in asli desi ghee or moms oiling paranthas with ghee? It just doesn't feel right.

Not true, I love the smell of ghee especially when it just starts to heat up, I love to roast my sooji in desi ghee (which is why I only make it on special occasions).

I love the smell of it too.

Our diets have never had any desi ghee until recently. I bought it because a recipe called for it a few days ago and really loved it. I just dont know if its a good idea to incorporate it into cooking but some health food websites seem to like it.

Regularly though, we use vegetable/olive oil.

How much is too much though?
