Is Cricket just another sports for Pakistanis or it may have some deeper meanings?

Whether, this current defeat is just another defeat or it will have some effects on nation’s psyche is difficult to say. Or to be more general, every defeat in a cricket match which is a result of a coward fight effects out nation psyche or not? I can at least talk about myself and it did effect me in many ways. It made me depressed to some extent and I can share a personal experience with you guys. I really had hard time to concentrate on my Professional Engineering Exam’s preparation, which I took on April 16th, the same day Pakistan lost the test match……… I did not follow the fourth day (it was the examination night for me here in usa) of pindi test deliberately because I knew that if Pakistan lost the match, which was pretty imminent at the end of third day, I wont be able to concentrate cent percent in this most crunching exam of my life. Here comes the million-dollar question. Am I being too emotional?…may be or maybe not. But it happens to me all the times whenever Pakistani team lose to anyone in general and to India in particular in a cricket match. Why is that? Yeah it hurts when we lose hockey but not to the same extent.

The point I am trying to make here that no matter what you say, no matter what you do, cricket does affect us (pakis) in a different way. We can always claim that it is nothing but a sport but is it really? It seems to me that it is more than just another sport. And I guess it has a lot to do with our national history. What do we have to be proud about? I am not pessimistic, I am just being realistic. With no democratic institutions in place, no real strategic/social/scientific advancement made in last 50 years (of course with exception of few personal geniuses) and with a very little recognition at international level, cricket does provide this lost but very aggressive nation a medium to express. We all felt so proud when we won the world cup because we as a nation discovered our true potential. We felt that we can beat anyone no matter how disastrous the circumstances are. With politicians being one of the most corrupted ones, civil servants being dishonest and even its own army-leadership being selfish on several occasions, this nation always looked towards its cricket heroes as a role model and took a psychological relief whenever the national cricket team beat other nations in general and Indians in particular. Alas, the notorious match-fixing scandal that followed the world cup achievement broke the spirit of this betrayed nation once again. We as a nation felt that the only door to release our psychological tensions was closed by our own “role models”.

Now if the aforementioned arguments make sense and if cricket does play an important role in elevating or decelerating this particular nation’s spirits based on some specific reasons outlined above, then don’t you guys think that this nation has every right to exert pressure on its players? Don’t you guys think it is time to make our players realize that when they represent Pakistan cricket team, they are not playing just another cricket match but they are also carrying an extra burden on their shoulders to give boost to this battered nation? I strongly believe that our players don’t realize this particular aspect. Don’t you guys think that even though people did not show up for test matches but somewhere deep inside every one was hurt and it affected whole nation’s performance for at least a week? So isn’t this a good idea to be harsh on our players and grind them under extra pressure of “nation’s expectations” rather than releasing the pressure by saying “ it was just a match”. Yeah it will be hard for players in beginning but eventually they will learn to play under this sort of pressure and show more responsibility.

If this poor nation is so sensitive about cricket and people don’t have anything else to be proud of and in respond, they see shoaib’s ( and other players too) lack of professionalism and commitment, what are they supposed to do as counteraction? ….we all saw wasim, malik and many others involved in match fixing ( though it was never proved but you only see smoke if there is some fire underneath). Why should nation put up with such a crap when it gave so much love and trust to these players?

All of us have seen our team giving up without putting up a fight. And it is not only about this series. This thing has become trademark of paki team. So question is whether nation has every right to be upset with these players or people should stand behind them to give them a boost? If proved guilty, should we punsih those superstars and kick them out of the team forever no matter how important those players are so that every one realize that they are kicked out because they did not respect nations emotions? But the million dollar question is who will do that. Some time you need a monster to fight with monsters. I am not calling our players monsters. Most them are nice guys with little realization of their responsibilities. I am just giving an example. But seriously who could be savior of Pakistan cricket by showing exemplary management, strict discipline and immaculate character and integrity?

PhoenixDesi,

First of all I hope you did good in your Exams, Secondly what are you doing in Engineering? Have you thought about a Writing Carrer? Your Penmanship is excellent, with a perfect flow of thought, articulation and presentation.

Having said that I for one agree with you 100% on the points you have made, and in more cases than not I can even relate to some of the issues.

In particular I would like to stress on the last para of your post, yes Team work, Discipline, Integrity, Character, Fighting Spirit and Ability to put the team First, should be the basic criteria for any Individual Sportsman to be considered for the team.

Again having said that once selected the players should be given a fair chance to produce, Dropping a player after a bad performance, is also not good for the morale of the player or the team.

Then if the player is not able to show consistency in his performance, yes he should be Disciplined, no matter what his status in the team, he has to be made aware that THE TEAM COMES FIRST!!!

Just an after thought,

How can you judge or determine if a player is doing good or not?

Every one has different parameters to measure the same situation, what may be excellent for you, maybe good to me, fair to the next person, bad to the third person, and poor to the fourth person, so again people would be at clobberheads.

In a situation like this, I think F & B's Concept (Fantasy Team) of Awarding points to the players, dependent on their performances would be the Ideal solution.

I know, a lot of folks are going to jump on me for making such a suggestion, but think about it, it dose make sense, and if you still disagree, thats an option you can exercise.

:D :D

82 views and not a single response, looks like the Pakistani Fans have already given up.

Thanks for the encouragement aejaz. I was little skeptical about opening up this post because of some sensitive stuff in it but then I realize that guppies are really mature enough to handle it. After all guppies have shown a lot of maturity and character during this series and accepted the defeat with such a dignity.

In respond to your concerns how to decide who should be sacked after the defeat, I would like to emphasize that my post is only concerned with those players who chose not to play to their 100 percent potential because of some “personal agenda”. I am only concerned about the players who have no problem in playing with nation’s emotions because of their personal benefits. My post has nothing to do with the players who tried their best to play hard but could not perform because of pressure or lack in technique. Selection committee can decide their future. And let me say this that common people, like you and me and million of others, are the best judge of any player’s level of commitment in the filed. I have been watching cricket for last 20 years with great passion and I don’t remember a single event when Indian or Pakistani spectators made a judgmental error about a cricketer’s level of commitment on the filed. For instance, Sami was hopeless but not even a single guppy or any cricket analyst questioned his level of commitment. We all saw that he tried his best but he has some technical and temperamental problems. Dravid got himself run out taking such a stupid single for duck in second test match but no one questioned his commitment. It is true about yaseer hameed and other guys also who tried but failed. True, paki and Indian analysts take their knives out little too quick to make a judgment about a player’s quality and technique but that is a different topic.

My problem is with those players who are responsible to let the nation down because of their own petty benefits. That is what always hurts me. When we sacrifice our sleep, personal time and even professional responsibilities to some extent, then we also demand same level of commitment from the players also. People feel being insulted when some *******s dare to play with their emotions by staging dramas… I do not want to take anyone’s name specifically but as a normal Pakistani supporter it really hurts to see someone shooting for ads and having fun only after 48 hours of such an humiliating defeats. True, dates for shooting these ads are planned long time ago but still ….well I hope you guys know what I mean. Whatever happened in Pakistan dressing room during 3rd test match was simply disgusting. In addition throughout 90s, our “legend” wasim akram has been accused by every captain for not playing to his full potential if he himself was not the captain of the team. And based on my personal “Salam Dua” with some of the former test cricketers, I know that these accusations are not hundred percent wrong. Again the same question comes up. Why was he and for that matter many more like him were allowed to continue?

The whole world keeps asking that why pakis did not show up in test matches even against India? I truly believe that it is because Pakistani cricket has lost its credibility among its own people. Many guppies have suugested that PCB should provide more facilities but trust me, this is not the main reason. People are showing silence anger towards players and Pakistan cricket administration. Yes they showed up in one day matches, because poor people had no outlet to express themselves and plus it was against India.

I don’t know how many of you keep track of news in Pakistan but in last 2 months, at least on 2 different occasions, thousands of normal people ( just like you and me) after a murder incidence got so agitated by police attitude that they took control of local police stations, burnt them, opened fire at police, blocked traffic in whole town for hours and literally took control of the whole city for many hours. That is what happens when people really get pissed off. Cricket runs in Pakistani’s veins and if some players and administrators keep making mockery of their emotions, I wonder one day people will take control of PCB and bring those players and administrators to justice themselves…..After all poor people have been seeing these drams for almost 12 years now…………It may sound ridicolous but but like i said in my ealrier post
"cricket is a serious business in pakisatn", it may very well happen one day..... Though I hope and pray that it never happens.
