My knowledge abt this particular aspect is VERY limited. If the question is about living in joint-family and is asking for proper Islamic rulings here are just a few things I know…

  1. There is nothing wrong with ppl living together, provided they take care of the points mentioned in #2 (below). Generally a cobined family means that sons (even after marriage) live with the parents in an extended family system. Sometimes other relatives (aunts, uncles) also live together in the same house. Expenses can be joint or separate, meal-taking can be combined or separate.

  2. By the laws of Islam, in which I believe in (there are so many variations…that I dunno if everyone will agree), a muslim women should wear proper hijab in front of all men other than those who are mehram… The list of mehram men is like husband, son, brother, father, real nephews, etc, meaning those who are PERMANENTLY MEHRAM. (More on this below). If living in a joint family means a women is unable to adhere to proper HIJAB (explained below) in front of men (husband’s brothers, husband’s father etc) then it is the responsibility of the husband to arrange a separate house for his wife and children.

MEHRAM: To those you can not marry. There are two kinds. One is permanent mehram, and the other is temporary mehram. The examples of permanent mehram are provided above. The temporary mehram are like the husband of your sister (while the sister is alive) or the father of your husband. The reason is that under islamic jurisprudence, a man cannot marry two sisters at the same time. Therefore while one sistem is alive and married to a man, that man is temporarily mehram to his wife’s sisters. Same is the case with husband’s father.

HIJAB: The most proper definition for hijab for women is that they should cover everypart of their body except face, hands (and feet). Also the clothes they wear should not be too tight (should not show the curves of the body) or too transparent (that the woman remains naked even while clothed).

Important:
Whether living in a combined family system or independantly, a muslim husband is required to provide his wife with all basic necessaities and to provide a standard of living consistent with his income. He is also required to pay the “Haq Mehr” to the wife, and also to give her a reasonable pocket-money in addition to household expenses consistent with his level of income.

There might be folks who disagree with the above point(s). but this is my take on this issue…

Ta ta!
