The unfortunate thing is - the number of technical Conferences across the globe is increasing. With increase in travel to these conferences. Which makes little sense in the Internet age.
Folks do little work in the lab. And presnt / publish stuff before concrete results obtained. And they present same results in multiple conferences. Thus padding their resumes without adding value.
This includes.climate change advocates. Who preach conversation while burning fossil fuels traveling across the globe.
ahem... ahem..... those conferences are for different purposes. Scientists would like to get out of the labs and network sometimes too. ;) You want to take away that little outing too? :P
Well, seriously, the purpose of presenting half-baked papers is to get feedback from several people (whom you might normally not interact with) and improve on it. Conference papers are not taken as established results.
Conferences are for networking also. Many of great researches, few of them in astrophysics also, happened through collaboration of scientists who met each other at the conferences for the first time.
I agree with both the economist and the engineer saheb. But cutting down travel by 50% may still get 90% of networking done, IMO.
Do you really believe professors travel that much? On average my estimate would be 2 conferences per year and universities do not reimburse cost of beer consumed during that travel time.
They are already making half the salary of their peers in industry. Be a little kind to them... ;)

Not just profs. Nowadays people are on the go. All the time. The number of journals are increasing exponentially. And so r publications. Did people all of a sudden become smarter?
By the way ur call on the mkt due to low interest rates spot on. I still think it is overvalued by any measure.
Since Mohammed didn't go to mountain, mountain came to Mohammed.

There is a reason why there are journal ratings and getting published in Science or Nature remains a dream for thousands of scientists.
Also, with access to vast amount of data, instruments and computing tools, quality research is very competitive now as well. No one even goes to locate a physical copy of a journal anymore [which used to be the only way to access research only a couple of decades ago].
