Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

It has always puzzled me why non-functional CJ Ch.Iftikhar Hussain chose a leading politcal personality - PPP MNA Ch. Aitzaz Ahsan to be his lead legal counsel. Also other members of the defence team are closely affiliated with the PPP as well. Why not choose neutral and non-politically affiliated lawyers instead?

Benazir Bhutto on the other hand has spent the two plus months since the judicial “crisis” broke out talking about wanting a deal with Musharraf, and happily working with him as President of Pakistan. She has also been instructiong her supporters to keep a relatively low profile in the pro-CJ demos. Let’s not forget BB has been out of the country for more than 8 years now, and it’s hard to remote control your own party from foreign lands, especially as you have been in power twice before, which does not provide great inspiration for people looking for real change.

Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan in effect working to become the next leader of the PPP on the back of Ch.Iftikhar Hussain’s momentum? Maybe that would explain BB’s desperation to cut a deal with Mushharaf and get back to Pakistan no matter what i.e. to take the steam out of the Chauduries’ campaign to make her irrelavant?

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

^ More than that its eligibility of Fatima "Bhutto" to take part in next elections that making her nervous and she wants to be in Pak. After all, Fatima is a "true" Bhutto and not "Zardari" like BB, Bilawal & Bakhtawar . Fatima may not endanger BB but further delays can put question marks on Bilawal and Bakhtawar s ability to lead the party in future

Pakistan in jaisay kutton kay baap ki jageer hai?

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

Hmmm…
Very interesting thought SB!

And as one comes to think of it, it really does sound very reasonable for Aitzaz. He is a shrewd politician and has spent a lifetime in the game and still has no surety of ever becoming a PM with BB around. He must’ve smelled the rat with BB being allured to the PM slot by Mush and he having known her would have known that she would dump anyone for the PM slot leaving him and everyone in a blackhole and hence his maneuvering!

This is way interesting…such drama…:hmmm:

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

well, you're bringing a good point here. But i hope you're wrong.
Ch. Aitzaaz is intelligent & educated but NO - we don't want him to be a leader. we already have had enough with all these drama politicians.

and truthfully speaking, PPP is already losing its charm - it has already lost actually. You can't run a party only on Bhutto's name.
Besides Ch Aitzaz isn't a popular brand name.

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

Its quite possible, Chaudhry Aitazaz is the most appropriate candidate with a clean slate.

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

It's probably true that BB does fear Fatima's potential as a leader, especially as she is the "nasal prast" grandaughter of ZAB. But I think that is quite a way in the future, especially as Fatima is only 25 years old and not politcally active, unlike BB who has been at the forefront of politics in one way form or another since 1979. Fatima may well stand in the elections, but she is not going to be catapultated into leading the PPP anytime soon. Plus the Bhutto name does not quite hold the charm it used to at one time - ZAB died as a "martyr", but BB tarnished his name by marrying a chor, and has lived in confortable foreign exile for 8 years while her party has had to fend for itself.

Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan is a very, very clever and skilled politician who has got himself positioned as the right hand man to the person who 'dared' to say "No" to Musharraf. At least that is how it is being played out politically, and to anyone looking for change in Pakistan that plays quite well. Whichever way the judicial case is decided, it will be Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan who will benefit politcally, and he is well positiioned then to grab the PPP leadership right from uder her. She knows that full well, and others are speculating in this regard as well.

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

Hmm! Interesting take on this. Would BB still choose to be in PPP then if not the chairperson anymore.

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

exactly why the CJ chose him

This thread is just an attempt to distract from Mush's actions, by a Mush lover

Revisit this thread in a few weeks/months time, nothing will come of this silly theory

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

Did u consider that the elections r only a few months away? Even ZAB needed more time than this. Pakistanis r nothing without their conspiracy theories.

Re: Is Ch.Aitzaz Ahsan plotting with the CJ lead a breakway PPP?

I think Ch.Aitzaz would at most carry the PPP Punjab with him, and she could be left with the rest. Just after the Karachi riots, Nawaz Sharif had to call the London Times pleading with BB not to make a deal with Musharraf - another indication that she is quite desperate to get back to Pakistan. If she does not make a deal, and whichever the judicial “crisis” turns out BB has lost the PPP, and she certainly will not return to Pakistan.

Bhutto ‘plotting pact’ for return

THE exiled former prime minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, has been warned by her arch rival against plotting a power-sharing deal with President Pervez Musharraf. Nawaz Sharif, another former prime minister, told The Sunday Times that he feared Bhutto – regarded as the country’s most charismatic politician – may be planning to trade her opposition to the military ruler for a chance to return to office. “She told me we’re not cutting any deal with the government but in interviews she has said, ‘Yes, there are talks going on’. I’m pleading with her not to go down that road,” he said.

Sharif, 57, forced into exile by Musharraf in 1999, believed he had a pact with Bhutto that they would not deal with the military-controlled government. The Pakistan Muslim League leader and Bhutto, 53, who heads the Pakistan People’s party, are the two most popular politicians and have each served two terms as prime minister. Both are planning to return to contest the general election, expected to be held towards the end of this year, despite a constitutional amendment passed by Musharraf barring anyone from serving a third term. They face threats of arrest and deportation. For Sharif, any deal by Bhutto that prolonged the military ruler’s tenure would be a blow. “I hope and pray we don’t talk to people who are destroying the institutions of the country,” he said. At least 27 people were killed in Karachi yesterday as pro-government and opposition groups clashed. The violence began when supporters of Musharraf tried to stop Iftikhar Chaudhry, the chief justice whose suspension led to nationwide protests, holding a rally.

**Silly Billy:**One can not say anything about intentions, but certainly one can learn lesson from past of Aitzaz Ahsan, especially when he has not said anywhere or claimed that he has changed. Anything is possible with Aitzaz Ahsan. Aitzaz Ahsan is opportunists and he might have seen the opportunity to get into the limelight on CJ case and use that for his own advantage. It is obvious that he is using CJ case for self-promotion and self-projection (that he has been charged in past too). I do not think that he cares for the people’s party and could ditch BB anytime if he finds that advantageous. Here is a chapter from his past that shows a lot including his love for judiciary and freedom of press:

Parliamentary Secretary criticizes Aitzaz Ahsan
By Saad Ahmed

ISLAMABAD—Parliamentary Secretary for Economic Affairs Division and a leader of Pakistan Muslim League, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Wednesday questioned Ch. Aitzaz Ahsan’s professed commitment to upholding the honour of judiciary and freedom of the press.

Addressing a press conference here, the young politician from Jhang said that Aitzaz Ahsan had become a ‘two-in-one’ personality by politicizing the judicial matters.

This is the same Aitzaz who was expelled from Tehreek-e-Istaqlal by his party on December 16, 1985 on the charges of self-promotion and self-projection,” the Parliamentary Secretary said.

**“This is the same politician who appointed 20 workers of his party as judges when he was Federal Minister for Law. ****Those judges were later dismissed by the judiciary as most of those had never appeared before the court,” he said and added that ****those also included Ahmed Saeed Awan who was a convict in a murder case. **“Why he did not resign when a criminal was made judge?” Waqas Akram asked.

The Parliamentary Secretary said the court slashed those appointments and gave a 350 page decision. He asked as to why Aitzaz Ahsan had not resigned in protest when PPP chairperson publicly said that she wanted to appoint her party’s Secretary General as Chief Justice of Supreme Court.

Waqas Akram said he was questioning the so-called “custodian of the judiciary” who had questioned all the young MPs of the parliament terming them ‘under-19 politicians’.

“We are proud to be young politicians as we have no bleak past as Mr.Aitzaz does,” he said.

Waqas Akram referred to a report in ‘Sikh Times’ alleging involvement in handing over the lists of Sikh freedom fighters to Indian authorities when Aitzaz Ahsan was Interior Minister and demanded an answer.

He said the daily Nawa-i-Waqt had reported that Aitzaz Ahsan resigned from PPP in 1977 when Bhutto regime was facing a difficult time due to the PNA movement.

**“The nation remembers that this is the same person who when he was Interior Minister, was involved in harassing and deporting a women journalist named Christina Lamb,” Waqas Akram said and added that why this worthy lawyer has not answered the allegations leveled against him by the renowned journalist Christina Lamb in her book, ‘Waiting for Allah- Struggle for Democracy’. **

Sheikh Waqas said that he suspected Aitzaz Ahsan’s complicity in attack on the office of Senator Dr. Khalid Ranjha as he had in the past “attacked the office of the then Chief Justice Lahore High Court Rashid Aziz Khan.”
