Re: Is being shy a good thing?
Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatahu,
Shyness is felt mainly be those who are humble by nature, and who are perfumed by the fragrance of meekness, and who are peace-loving peaople, and already enjoy a sense of tranquility from their lives. It is not a cowardly thing at all, neither does shyness conflict with bravery, but is actually a kind of virtue whose nature helps prevent adoption of and falling prey to sin, vice and unholy acts.
I say this because we find that most of the Prophets of Allah were naturally shy, in the sense that their meekness and humility was so great that they acted with an innocent sense of shyness. The most perfect example is that of the Holy Prophet (saw) himself who was shy mainly before his commission, yet he displayed actions of courage and bravery and wisdom and justice. Even when he was appointed as RasoolUllah he was the meekest man in the history of the world, yet his characteristics of a commanding and leading personage were not melted away, but were ever present. Also we all know that Hadhrat Musa (as) was very shy and is hailed by Allah Himself in the Torah as being the meekest man upon the face of the earth. We also see this shyness in Jesus (as) which was manifested as humility, otherwise many people are shy simply because of lack of courage or bravery. This kind of shyness is not praiseworthy, but the shyness due to meekness is indeed a laudable quality, which is also related to high resolve and inner strength, whereas the former type is related to weakness.
Most of the time it is the innocent, peaceful and the pure hearted who are shy, and whose shyness is conceived by their righteousness, and this is the type of shyness that was apparent in Abraham (as) as well, the KhaleelUllah. All of these beloved servants of Allah combined in themselves every praiseworthy quality, yet were known for their extraordinary shyness.
Although, I say again that shyness should not overpower your quality of courage, nor should it stand in the way of your observance of justice. Once you master this, you would have mastered the characteristics which Allah encourages us to adopt.
I myself am very shy, and I prefer this quality which indeed is a laudable virtue, whose grandeur is found mostly in peaceful and peace-loving personages.
Allah bless you
