Is a Wedding Planner Worth It?

I’ve always wondered about this…is it worth it to hire a wedding planner?

Did you hire one?

Would you hire one again?

Re: Is a Wedding Planner Worth It?

It depends- how big is your wedding, is it out of town, are you expecting out of town guests? How organized are you and do you have the time and energy to dedicate yourself to the planning? Is it important for you to have a well organized smoothly running function or as a bride are you just going to show up and sit on stage for a couple of hours? What is your overall budget? Do you have a RELIABLE TRUSTWORTHY sidekick - or ideally, several - to step in with decision making when you can't and that you can trust to handle everything on the day of? Do you make decisions easily or do you dither and fuss and get stressed easily?

A planner can can be a valuable asset for sure. They can manage and organize appointments and vendors, and you and your fiancé, as well as your families when things get hectic. They can keep your budget on track and in control and make sure you are reminded of your priorities when it comes to expenditure. And then on the day of, it is their job to look after everything and everyone involved in your day so you have no worries.

That said, I had no planner. I had no budget for one but I also know what I want, make decisions quickly and I love doing research just generally so I enjoyed the process. It helped to have a supportive fiancé and most importantly, only 96 guests to manage. I also had a very clear picture of what I wanted my wedding day to be like so it was a matter of making lists and checking tasks off. Was it stressful? At times, absolutely, but I still wouldn't do it differently unless I had a larger budget and more guests.

Re: Is a Wedding Planner Worth It?

No, because weddings are hardly ever worth the money, time, and effort we put into them. If people actually cared that much about the marriage itself then we wouldn't have grand weddings to begin with. Unless you have money to burn then by all means go for it.

Re: Is a Wedding Planner Worth It?

I don't know if there's anything a wedding planner can do that I cannot do for myself. But then again, if I was getting married at Ritz or something...maybe.

Re: Is a Wedding Planner Worth It?

I think it really depends on your number of guests. If you expect 200+, hiring a planner might be a good idea. If the wedding planner is experienced, they have a list of vendors that they work with who are reliable. And the good planners have back ups. Also, there are a lot of nitty gritty things involved- like contracts. I've seen people get screwed over because the event decorator added an extra amount in the contract that they weren't aware of. Wedding planners can help with that, work with the budget, deal with different point of views in the families, and over design advice.

based off of weddings I've seen done by planners- I think desi wedding planners are a good idea if they're affordable and experienced.

Re: Is a Wedding Planner Worth It?

I agree with somegroovychick. Whether or not it would be worth it to hire a wedding planner depends on the size of the function, the location, how organised you are, how much time you have to dedicate to planning, and various other factors.

We hired a wedding planner because our engagement and wedding were rather large. In our culture, engagements are as big as the actual wedding and that required loads of organising. Our engagement and wedding both had around 300+ guests, many of whom were from abroad (most of my family lives in Denmark and most of my husband's family lives in Holland and to a lesser extent, Afghanistan) and required accommodations to be made for them. To further complicate things, both events were held in a different city than where we actually live. I had also just graduated from uni a couple of months prior so I was still settling some things in regards to that. Overall, I found that hiring a wedding planner was quite helpful and definitely worth it. My mum and mother-in-law also helped with loads of things.
