Im gonna start doing glycolic acid peels however is 40% a safe amount to start off with?
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
it's too much- start with 20% or even less if you have sensitive skin
I started with 20 but found it did nothing. Now use 40. Bit scared to move to 50 :-/. Use that on the body.

How do you like the 40? Did it sting/ leave your face red after the use?
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
Have you used any products containing retinol or glygolic acids at all? Like creams? Do you have sensitive skin?
I started off with 30%. But I've heard many people starting off with 40%. Just depends on how touch your skin is. If you've used reitnol or other AHA products....then 40% should be fine since your skin is already a bit used to the chemical. Alpha hydroxy souffllee (12% glycolic) is a good one.
If you do start off with 40%....make sure you do a patch test first. And also keep a close eye once you apply the layer. Look for any redness/swelling...and especially frosting. Have neutralizer right in front of you (I use baking soda).

i started with 8%, then moved to 15 and then 20. always start at low unless u r going to a professional. with 40% u'll have a long down time n won't b able to go out for 1-2 weeks esp when it starts to scale.

It took you upto 2 WEEKS to "heal" from 40% glycolic?
You must have super sensitive skin! How long did you leave it on for?
Usually with 40%.....I can now leave it on for 5-6 minutes and my face stays pinkish for like 24 hours...but I never get any frosting so there's no downtime. Now I did a 12.5 TCA over Christmas break....2 layers of that frosted my face and that took about a week to heal.
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
^Is being frosted a good thing or doesn't mean much? I've done up to 4 layers of TCA 12.5 % but never frosted.

i didn't read well i meant TCA, not glycolic n for TLC 20% -3 layers it does take 2 week. scaling/flaking starts after 8-10 days.
@ Sajalina some frosting is good but not too much. 12% is not that strong

Wow....your skin is tough! :)
Frosting just means the acid penetrated deep into the skin. If the skin frosts, then in a few days it'll turn brown/scabby. Then the skin needs to be left alone other than applying moisture. Within a few days, skin starts to peel. Pretty much that top layer peels off revealing new skin underneath.
Frosting is a "good thing" in the sense that the acid penetrated deeper. If you can afford the "downtime", then it's great. Over Christmas break I did my 12.5% TCA (my 1st time doing TCA) and it took literally 7 days for my face to peel completely. While I did go outside (grocery shopping...even went to the office 2 days).....it really is difficult to do do most daily stuff while heading b/c the face is scabby...and once the skin starts peeling, I looked like I had some weird skin disease! I only got away with it b/c I totally ignored all my friends and at the office, no one was there except 2 co-workers (ie. no clients)
The frosting/peeling definately gave me face a more dramatic improvement visually. Unfortunately I won't be able to do it again until next Christmas b/c of the downtime. So I do lactic and glycolic since I can do those without any downtime.
If you want to see a more dramatic improvement....you might want to consider moving upto 15% TCA....or maybe even 18% if you can handle 4 layers of 12.5%.

Oh ok.....lol.....that makes sense. :) Yep...TCA requires 1-2 weeks of downtime. :)
Huge 2nd on the comment regarding frosting. The "frosting" should be hints of while with plenty of pink showing through. The skin should NOT be stark white.
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
^Yeah my plan is to do a higher strength next time.
What kinda results do you get with Lactic and Glycolic? Those don't make you peel at all?
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
I started with 50% and it did absolutely nothing for me. It didn't sting for more then a minute, and I felt no peel. I then tried lactic/glycolic 15% and my skin felt amazingly smooth and clean, yet no peeling at all. The peels were from two different brands. I think it might have to do with brand you buy it from aswell ?

Nope...I don't peel with lactic or glycolic. With lactic, I've been using 40% and just bought 55%. I've left the 40% on for upto 10 minutes with absolutely no issues. Out of all the acids, lactic is the most gentle one. With glycolic, I used to do 40% but currently using 30%.
I also use Retin-A and self-made vitamin C serum. These combined with the lactic or glycolic peels....over time I've noticed a major improvement on my skin tone and overall texture/brightness etc. These have also helped me get rid of hyperpigments caused by acne. I'll usuallly do a 40% Lactic (getting ready to move upto 55%) OR 30% glycolic once every 3 weeks or so. The ONLY reason I alternate between the two is b/c I just happen to have them all. TCA is great for a "dramatic" change if you have the downtime....but lactic/glycolic are great alternatives for "maintenance".
** Now with Glygolic, if the % is high enough and if its left long enough...I'm sure it can cause the skin to frost. Since I use it for maintenance and don't want it to frost....I usually neutralize when my face turns dark pink (but before any frosting).

Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
I’ve been buying stuff from MUAC for almost 3 years and LOVE them. Products and customer service is amazing. They always have a 15% off code under their discount section…and free shipping in the U.S. If you sign up for their e-mail, they send a 20% off code once every month that’ll be valid for a day or so. Oh…and if you’re not comfortable giving credit card info. on the internet…you can call their number and place orders over phone.
I’ve bought the following products from them and loved it all:
- Glycolic, lactic, and TCA peels
- Argan Oil
- Supermatte Antishine (my current evening primer for foundation)
- 15% Glycolic body lotion
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
i bought mine from them as well. but seriously it goes a long way.
Re: Is 40% Glycolic Acid Peel Safe for Starting?
As you can see above...everyone's skin is different.
Often times we use GA in different products without really noticing it so our skin gets a chance to get used to it.
Please start slow and work your way up. When it comes to skin - especially your facial skin - its better to be safe than sorry. So start low...around 15% and see how you do with it. If you feel okay and notice no difference for a week or two...move up to 20 and keep going with the same approach.
