Irshan Manji self proclaimed Islamic Lesbian Scholar want to reform Islam to except Gay and Lesbians

Irshad Manji, author of controversial book “The Trouble with Islam Today” has been called “Osama bin-Laden’s worst nightmare” by the New York Times and “one of three women creating a positive change in

Islam today” by the Jakarta Post. Her book has been translated into French, Spanish, Italian, Persian, Urdu and Arabic. Manji is the recipient of the Simon Wiesenthal Award of Valor.

Manji was born in Uganda in 1968 to parents of Egyptian and Gujarati descent. Her family moved to Canada when she was four, as a result of Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians. She and her family settled near Vancouver in 1972. Manji Belong to Shia Ismaili (Agakhani) sect of Islam. She has a bachelor’s degree in History from University of British Columbia.

While Manji has been applauded for her work in “The Trouble with Islam Today”, she has also faced criticism for the book. **Critics say that she has resorted to Arab bashing and appeasing the Jewish block to gain name and fame. **The book which discusses in length about the way Islam has forgotten its tradition of critical thinking, called “ijtihad”, and the way it discriminates women and promotes violence against people of other faith especially the Jews. The book attempts to explore the Islamic tradition and the Holy Koran to know what the Prophet really preached. Since she is not an Islamic scholar, critics have said that she is not qualified to talk about the issues in Islam and her views are not to be taken seriously.

Manji’s critics may have a point in saying that she lacks religious scholarship, but the fact that so many people, not only Muslims but Jews, Christians and Hindus, are reading the book and applauding her for her strength and courage in discussing such taboo subjects means that she has some valid points. She may not be an Islamic scholar but she is a lesbian Shia Ismaili Muslim woman who has valid questions on why she is discriminated against for her gender and for her sexual preference? She is right in questioning if Islam really preaches violence against Jews.

Coming back to the topic. This is not the 1st time that some individual maligned Islam or a sect for own personal reasons, nor it would be the last.

Irshad is more like a stunt then any thing else. For what ever reason
she was able to put her self in whole worlds attention, But
her work in not cradible.

When you want to reform some thing you need to know it inside out,
You can't mix a retard imam-masjid + half brain dead father + a rebel soul
to make a rational point, thats how you make poetry.

She should try expressing her self in some other way.

As long as muslim act stupid she will be heard by non muslims, but to muslims
her work in not creadible. She mix her emotion and truma in the her arguments a lot.

Plus what I found funny, she made fun of islam and the whole divinity
business, same time he went on for pages and pages that how devine
her trip to jewish holy land was. I mean what is the deal here???

If she had done her research in any area known to white ppl, they would have thrown
her work out of the window by now. Its so vauge and so below any research
standards of any institute.

easiest way of becoming a "scholar" or an "expert on islam" in the west. If you are a muslim and bash islam or go out of your way to do things that islam prohibits, then the media makes you an instant expert.

She can't influence Islam or Muslims in anyway.

Islam is not going to change to accomodate to her slutty whims.

This is Islam not Christianity or Judaism where even Athiests can be priests.

Her work is not worth the paper it's wrote on, let her bark, don't give her any attention because sometimes we Muslims generate more interest in these people than they're worth, nobody would have known who Salman Rushdi was had we not created so much of a hue and cry, nobody would have bought his books, but we gave him publicity...

She knows more about Islam then all of you guys commenting combined.

She once came to my university and all the MSA and PSA were huffing and puffing that they are going to ask her questions and we are going to destroy her.

They spend 3 days thinking up of questions and she shot them down in less than 3 seconds.

Instead of passing blind judgment on her...maybe you should do some research on her views.

I have read her books. There are some views which I agree with her and they are some I don't.

Don't make a blanket statement that everything she says is wrong or right.

If by "knowing" you mean she has a lot of information about Islam, I would have to probably agree with you. But, there's a huge difference between having information and actual knowledge.

Even non-muslims have extensive information about Islam which is used every now and then to twist and misinterpret verses of the Quran. That does not make them an expert on the faith. She's a mere holder of Information.

If I'm on a quest to achieve a goal, i would want to acquire a lot of information too. That's what careers are all about, information and keeping up with the latest and staying renewed. Knowledge however comes from originality, and stems from the roots. Islam does not permit, nor promote or encourage lesbianism, or same-sex relationships of any sort, no matter which shade you color it in.

Story of Lut (a.s.) is cited in the Quran for the very reason that we should take lesson from it, pity some of us take parts of the Quran as a jest, and stick to the other parts which suit our goals.

She ought to re-educate herself and gain actual knowledge, rather than compiling information. A good debater is not necessarily the ultimate seal of a good muslim; practicing Islam is.

And just for the clarity, I'm not passing a judgment on her. That's not for me to decide. But, you can't give just anyone a blank check on the faith either, especially when they make false claims of practices allowed by the faith which are in fact in the very spirit of the faith, prohibited.

Well, convincing some one needs more knowledge about the person being
addressed then any thing else. She admits that she "targets" young minds.
And she knows them!! I don't want to get into what make them prone to
such exploitaion where they are willing to go agaisnt there very core with a light touch.
I have seen many religious scholars talking, none of them come off as half

religious scholars + half sales rap + half trying too-hard-marketing person.

Her show is impressive but its all over the place. As I have mentioned it lacks
depth on the subject.
With all due respect. In student life we can as smart as Einstien but mostly
our brain lacks depth. We are more like what is put infront of us rather then
concentrating why was that put infront of us.

She admits she manipulate young mind to "win" argument.
Again with all due respect, her work is not worth wasting time on.
