Re: IRI latest Survey
1st October-2009
Islamabad, Pakistan – The International Republican Institute (IRI) today released its survey of Pakistan public opinion. The poll was conducted July 15-August 7, 2009.
The randomly selected sample consists of 4,900 adult men and women from 329 rural and 161 urban locations in 60 districts in all four provinces of Pakistan. The margin of error for the national sample will not exceed + 1.41 percent with a 95 percent level of confidence.
IRI has conducted surveys in Pakistan since 2002. The goal of the program is to communicate the concerns of the Pakistani people to their political leaders and to use this information in IRI’s work with Pakistan’s political parties.
A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, IRI advances freedom and democracy worldwide by developing political parties, civic institutions, open elections, good governance, and the rule of law.

Re: IRI latest Survey
Interestingly the margin of error is very low in this report (1.41%). And only a minority were unsure of all questions asked. 50% responders were less than matric (1oth grade) level 'educated'.
For a population of about 180 million millions, 4900 people's opinion may not be of much worth. There is a greater chance of sampling error here.
However, if it is taken as reference to making some hypothesis then, it still appears, that the sample people are just following reactionary instincts. Meaning, if they are not happy (and they most of the time are not happy), they would like to change the regime or methods of current regime. Only to find out that even next regime will not or cannot deliver what it promises due to many reasons.
Interestingly, as it is widely spread as negative point of current govt., they have financial reasons (inflation or jobs) to worry about more than any other reasons.
The question posed on page 6 and 10 (country heading towards right or wrong direction and feeling secure) and its answer is all time (universally) true and not really means anything. Many country's citizens would answer the same way.
The information is obtained by these sample population is largely via TV, and no doubt they answered on page 10 as they answered. It also shows the power of media especially TV versus Radio.
