Things are getting murkier for the US, with the heaviest fighting to date at Nasiriya. I hope that Karbala will NOT be a site of fighting, too much of our Islamic particularly Shiite history rooted there. Any collateral damage BS will not fly there.

From the BBC:
"Heavy fighting has also erupted at Karbala, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from Baghdad.
A CNN reporter said US helicopter gunships attacked a division of Iraq's Republican Guard there and were met with heavy anti-aircraft fire. "

The Americans were expecting the Iraqis to withdraw and fight in the cities. I don't think they were expecting them to fight in the Southern Cities though, so they bypassed them. allowing the Iraqis to use the cities as bases to attack. When you get down to the level of street fighting, the technological edge is no longer as decisive.

Very true indeed. Take the battle of Umm Qasr for instance - they claimed to have taken that on Friday and today extra UK forces are going into fight the continued Iraqi resistance fighters there. The same picture is evident across southern Iraq - Basra, Najaf and Nasiriya where the Anglo-Saxon forces suffered all-mighty humiliation. Such a humiliation that we now hear a dozen American soldiers are bring flown to Germany for treatment.
