Well, what I did was use photoshop to "repair" the sections of cardboad with letters on them to look like unwritten nearby sections of the cardboard. This produced an absolutely convincing blank piece of cardboard.
I encountered the same problem as you, that of it being tricky to write realistic-looking letters with a mouse. The way I resolved this was that I would cut and paste the letters from the original picture, sometimes cutting up individual letters and combining them with others to make realistic looking letters.
The "q" in "Iraq" is in fact "p" from "Lcpl", just mirrored horizontally. The "A" in "Americans" came from the "D" in "Dad", merged with the horizontal line in the "t" in "sister".
Unfortunately, the lack of a convincving "g" meant that I couldn't put on my preferred caption - "I logged onto Gupshup and all I got was this lousy American soldier"
