Iraq orders over a million doses of nerve gas antidote

If Saddam once again uses chemical weapons in the upcoming months will people here defend that action?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iraq raised the suspicions of Turkey and the United States by ordering 1.25 million doses of atropine, a drug that can be used as an antidote to nerve gases, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.

The United States was discussing the order with authorities in Turkey, which The New York Times reported on Tuesday was the main source of the atropine Iraq wanted to buy.

Atropine has other medical uses but the size of the Iraqi order raised suspicions that the Iraqis might want it in reserve as an antidote for their own military forces if they decide to use nerve gases in a conflict.

“There is some concern and this needs to be looked at in terms of their real need. We are discussing the issue with the Turkish government,” the U.S. official said.

“We have common concerns about Iraq and about what Iraq has done in the past and might do in the future,” he added.

The New York Times said the United States was pressing Turkey to stop the sales and that Turkey had indicated it was willing to review the matter.

“If the Iraqis were going to use nerve agents,” the newspaper quoted one official as saying, “they would want to take steps to protect their own soldiers, if not their population. This is something that U.S. intelligence is mindful of and very concerned about.”

The Times said Iraq also ordered the autoinjectors that inject the atropine into a person’s leg. One official said Iraq had also ordered another antidote for chemical weapons, obidoxime chloride.

Apples and oranges. US and Iraq can't simply be held to the same standards. We are talking about a democratic country and a basketcase.

I wonder why a Country that claims it has no WMD and no stockpiles of nerve gasses would find it necessary to order a million doses of an antidote for the very toxins they claim they don't have.

all the wayyyyyy!!

talk about how we have so much in common

Maybe they are worried that US will launch nerve gas attacks on Iraqi people. And want to be better prepared against such an eventuality.

After he gasses the ME in a big hissy fit, he's going to need that many just for himself, his wives, the Republican Guard and his look-a-likes to survive.

The question is, If US uses checmical/biological weapons on Iraqi soldiers and general population in the possible upcoming war agasint Iraq, will the people here defend that action? Will it even make the local ABC world news? Mind you, the biggest stockpile of chemical/biological weapons exists right here in US, not in any other country.

You guys do know that this is just Washington Propaganda..dont ya?
