It would appear that a phenomenon I first noticed in the US media has come to roost at Gupshup too.
5 years ago, every time a US soldier was killed in Iraq, there would be major news coverage of that person as an individual. Now, US deaths are treated as little more than statistics.
Similarly, every major attack in Iraq was discussed in quite some detail on Gupshup in the past. By contrast, this week nearly 40 people, mainly wedding guests, were killed in a single bombing in Iraq and there wasn’t a single thread on it. How deadened we have become in time.
Re: Iraq fatigue has hit World Affairs forum
The Iraqis being killed are being killed by other Iraqis. So the "phenomenon" of silence is really no different than any other conflict where Muslims are killing Muslims.
Re: Iraq fatigue has hit World Affairs forum
i think the issue is that these discussions become rote after a while. you can only discuss the status quo for only so long, and thanks to America's 100 year presence in Iraq it doesnt look like the forum will come alive soon :)
Re: Iraq fatigue has hit World Affairs forum
^ so if America were to leave in 100 days and not 100 years, there won't be any more killing of Iraqis, not more wedding bombs to ignore?
Re: Iraq fatigue has hit World Affairs forum
maybe not but then it wouldnt be status quo would it.
i do think american presence exacerbates the situation.
