Iranian perception of Pakistanis...

I thought it was appropriate to put this topic under Culture but Mods, you’re welcome to move it to another section if you see fit to do so.

I have pretty much known this for years now as common knowledge that most Iranians dislike Pakistanis and I don’t mean that they get merely irritated by them, they downright dislike and even hate them. I used to wonder all the time what is so horrible that we Pakistanis have done in order to generate such a reaction from Iranians so I finally took the bull by the horns and asked a fellow student in my MBA program who is of Iranian descent why this is so. He responded that it is nothing more than how our (and by “our” I mean people of Pakistani heritage) habits are perceived…(ex. cutting in line, being pushy, rude, and loud, driving cabs, and being “dirty browns”). We had an informative discussion going so I asked how that is different than how some Iranians can be to which he replied that most Iranians you come across are very goal-oriented, clean, have manners, and are driven by success. I also mentioned that despite the stereotypes of Pakistani people that Iranians have, Iranians are generally perceived by our people as having loose morals and seem to have lost Islam, for the most part. It was interesting because although he sees me as an exception to the rule, I am still offended by how carelessly Iranians can lump ALL Pakistanis in one category in a heatbeat, making silly gross generalizations.

A Pakistani person i know has a best friend who’s Iranian; lives in Tehran now. i may be wrong but i really don’t believe that “most” (i am quoting the word used above) Iranians have this perception of Pakistanis. i am sure some Iranians do, as i am certain some Pakistanis have their own perceptions of X/Y/Z groups of people. i think what i am trying to state is that some Pakistanis have perceptions of Iranians that aren’t nearly always complimentary either, and vice versa. i don’t think it’s that large a group of the population though; i may be wrong, but i honestly don’t comprehend how we would rationally state “most” Iranians feel that way if “most” Iranians haven’t been interviewed on the topic. That’s like saying literally millions of Iranians have negative perceptions of Pakistanis (“dirty browns”), but rationally speaking - we can’t say that can we. It would be similar to stating that millions of Pakistanis are racist, narrow-minded and bigoted based upon the actions of an extremely small group. If we were to make one sweeping generalization about others, then let’s expect that we will have to accept sweeping generalizations about ourselves as well.

:flower1: Everyone is more than free to disagree with the above. Who knows i could be wrong.

most iranians are losers who have weak faith and became all westernized when the Shah was in Iran. Thats why you got iranians here in USA who say they are muslim and dont know even know how to pray lol

Nadia, to correct you, the verbage I used ("most") was stated from MY perspective only. I meant that most Iranians, in MY experience, feel this way. Overall, surely it can be a matter of a few, some, a lot, all, and what have you that feel similarly since like you said, not everyone in the criteria population has been interviewied to arrive at a definite conclusion as to how many Iranians do actually feel that way. But again, in MY experience, Iranians dislike Pakistanis and it is sad because ideally there should not be any superiority among muslims yet we see this in this scenario as well as in many other cases where one ethnicity proclaims to outdo another regardless of the identical religious following.

Madhanee, I disagree that Pakistanis should identify more with India. Why not be distinct and identify with being PAKISTANIS than any other ethnicity? The truth of the matter is, Pakistanis are racially mixed no matter what is said. There are those that strongly believe that we derive strictly from Indians and other who feel we are quite diverse racially. I think we're a mix but there is definite diversity in ethnicity from the various invasions our land has undergone over the centuries.

I feel that we should try whenever possible to set the record straight about Pakistanis and attempt to dissolve negative stereotypes. It starts with one person and you begin to see a chain reaction. We should be proud of our heritage and try to convey that by example to outsiders who may not know any better as far as what to believe regarding the Pakistani people.

though it is true that foreigners, iranians included lump pakistanis and indians in one category the differentiation is about as educated as my great grandfather labelling every white skinned person on the planet as british.

but as far as iranis go, the general perception of the usual attitude of ordinary iranians towards any-given pakistani does tend to be on the snooty side.

Sweetpie, that’s exactly my point. To be proud of our 98% heritage (which is Indian). Punjabis in Pakistan are the same stock as Punjabis in India. Until the division of the Indian sub-Continent, we were all Indians. We were never Mongols or Persians or Arabs. Were we ever? And yes, we should try to identify ourselves as Pakistanis too, but what exactly is a “Pakistani”? Bangladeshis were Pakistanis until 1973 for crying out loud.

madhanee are you a pakistani btw?

my own experience.. i've lived four years in a hostel in pakistan which had fair amounts of people from all parts of pakistan and the culture there was pretty homogenous.

over here in LA in my university theres thousands of indians and some 50-odd pakistanis. i live surrounded by indians. but even though we're engulfed in them it is such a culture shift in terms of language..mores... that the boundaries between the two communities remain very distinct.

as far as being indians 50 years ago, its irrelevant now. pakistan exists and that chunk of humanity has moved on and evolved in its own way into a very distinct identity.

I can understand what Madhanee is saying and to some point he/she is 100% right.

And sweetipie it is not only persians dear, have you met Afghans? I know a lot and well they have the same if not worst view of Pakistanis than Persians.

Sorry to sound naive but didn’t a lot of muslims migrated to India from Persian side? I may be wrong but as far as I know the muslim rulers weren’t really Indian and when they came wou akeley tou nahi aien hoon gey?

I don’t give a damn as to what Iranians think of us :snooty:

My father went to Iran his name is the same as a sahabi’s and the Irnians don’t like it but they were really happy when my father told them that my bro’s name is Ali. What does that tell you abt them?

for any iranians reading though, i think you guys cook a mean doner shoner whatever thing it is. :flower1:

I really needed a good laugh today :)

You are right Ali, Hossan and Hassan they love those names. My brothers name is Omar and we lived near lots of shia and they hated that name :) but I do not hate anyone :)

^ My theory in life is I respect every individual be it of any nationality, Indian, Iranian, American, French whatever but the moment they speak a bad word abt my country or religion, they don’t deserve no respect. Why? Because if I respect there’s they better respect mine :snooty:

If any Iranian is reading it, I would love to be a friend with him/her just so that I can get to know Iranians better :stuck_out_tongue:

fantastic maybe this is pushing away from the topic but you do not like a thing like a pakistani or you full pakistani? sorry I do not mean to be rude just interested

Ummm waisey I didn’t get it but from what i did understand, I still didn’t understand anything :bummer:

Can u please elaborate so that I can reply?

are you 100% pakistani?

And what is a 100% Pakistani? As far as I know I don’t have any milawat  Do u mean ethnically or in deeds? Both my parents are from Pakistan, as for deeds well to each their own :stuck_out_tongue:

If i still didn’t answer your question then well just look at my custom title, you will know why :bummer:

There are things to dislike about Pakistanis just like there are things to dislike about people from Iran, burkina faso, lesotho and burundi..

the point is that this becomes a problem when you have such preconceived notions about people from any area that you let that cloud your judgement in assessing an individual seperate from whatever stereotypical crap you have been fed all along.

I mean its rare that u go to any country and ask people there what they think of people next door and hear all praises..ask any canadian what he thinks of americans, or bahrani what he thinks of qataris, and you will hear many negative stereotypes, a lot of them based on some truth which is then stretched and extrapolated to an entire population.

horsing around with it in fun and games is all fine, but those who live their lives by sych stereotypes, in my view its better to not bother with them.
