Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri was supposed to be the leader after Ayatollah Khomeini as his ideas were quite similar to the later. Does anyone know why he was jailed and didn’t become the leader of Iran?
Iran’s leading dissident cleric Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri has been admitted to hospital following a suspected heart attack.
The authorities released him from house arrest last week amid concern over his deteriorating health.
The Iranian authorities are thought to have been worried that 80-year-old Ayatollah Montazeri could have become a focus for opposition groups within Iran if he died while under house arrest.
“Suddenly he had a pain in his heart and we immediately took him to hospital and the doctors have decided to keep him in for three days,” his son told Reuters news agency.
The ayatollah, who is a key reform figures, was once designated as successor to the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ayatollah Khomeini.
