Iranian acid attack victim *spares* her attacker of the same fate

This is an update to a story that was posted a while back about the woman from Iran who was due to see her attacker punished by having drops of acid put in his eyes:

Last minute mercy: Iranian woman blinded in acid attack spares man who did it from same fate

An Iranian woman has declared that she doesn’t want to see ‘eye for an eye’ justice done towards the man who blinded her in an acid attack.

**Ameneh Bahrami spared Majid Mohavedi from the same fate that she suffered after he poured liquid on her face, taking her sight, when she turned down his marriage proposal. **

She had been due to mete out the punishment to him but spared him at the last minute, Iranian media reported today.

Miss Bahrami was blinded in 2004 when Mohavedi poured acid onto her face after she spurned his hand in marriage. **In 2008, a court sentenced Mohavedi to be blinded in both eyes for taking away Ms Bahrami’s sight, using the principle of retribution permitted under Iran’s Islamic law. **

‘I have been trying for seven years to get the qisas [retribution] sentence, but today I decided to pardon him,’ Ms Bahrami was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

She said the international interest in the case was one reason for deciding to drop her demand for the sentence of retribution to be carried out: ‘It seemed like the entire world was waiting to see what we did.’

The case attracted international media attention, and the rights group Amnesty International urged Iran not to inflict the retributive form of punishment.

The concept of ‘qisas’ also applies to other crimes in Iran, such as murder. A victim’s family can demand the death of a convicted murderer or commute the sentence in return for financial compensation from the criminal.

Tehran prosecutor general Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi praised Ms Bahrami’s move as a ‘courageous act’, and said the judiciary had until then been determined to carry out the sentence.

‘Everything was ready for carrying out the qisas on Majid’s eyes, but Ameneh pardoned him on the brink of the execution of the sentence,’ Dolatabadi told ISNA.

‘Ameneh is seeking compensation for other injuries inflicted on her,’ he added, but did not give any further details.

A lawyer for Mohavedi had previously said his family would have great difficulty in finding the amount of money sought by Mr Bahrami to commute the sentence, as their only asset was a house in Tehran.

Read about this earlier and just wow, how many people could be that forgiving? Am curious to know why it took seven years though for her to be given the qisas as i thought Iran was pretty strict in handing out punishments.

Re: Iranian acid attack victim spares her attacker of the same fate

The woman's got a huge heart.....especially since she lost something as precious as her eyesight. I watched a program on GEO yesterday about a similar incident. A married woman had an argument with her husband and went back to her mom's house with her young daughter. A guy who was deeply infatuated with her came to her house to propose....parents rejected him. He didn't give up....she rejected him as well. He stalked her...sexually harrassed her I think..she told him again that she's not interested. Consumed by rage...he climbed over the walls of her house in the middle of the night and poured acid over her face....some of which landed on her young daughter. The mother lost her ear and eye...the innocent daugther was badly burned. The guy was arrested...but seemed to show little to no guilt for his actions.

What is up with Asian culture and such crimes? I was thinking about this yesterday. You don't really hear about acid attacks in Western culture...so why are they more prevalent in Asia? What is the root cause? It is because the genders are so isolated...that they have little experience with healthy/normal interactions with one another...and thus have a harder time in dealing with rejection?

I've often seen on Indian channels especially but not confined to them.....programs where people from real life will say how they fell "in love" with a classmate that they saw for the first time from afar....or some girl that they saw on the bus or walking down the street. And I find it odd how easily the word, "love" or "love at first sight" is used when that person is practically a stranger. When you give such a strong name as "love" to feelings...you're setting yourself up for heartache down the road and you've barely begun. But what causes it? Bollywood....or lack of experience with relationships....and the "newness" of the feelings getting you carried away?

This has to be one of the most evil and despicable acts that you could carry out on another human being.

It does happen in other cultures, maybe not as much but girls get stabbed/raped as opposed to getting acid thrown over them. Bad people exist everywhere and even though in the West girls and guys mix freely, crazy ex boyfriends like Raoul Moat are just as bad as the ‘love at first sight’ guys. Just evil crazies.

Re: Iranian acid attack victim spares her attacker of the same fate

Yeah I’ve heard of crazy exes in other cultures that go psycho…and will even resort to murder. I’ve heard of a couple of acid crimes committed by non-Asians. But…it’s interesting that acid throwing in particular is so common in Asia. Why such a strong inclination toward that?

Re: Iranian acid attack victim spares her attacker of the same fate

Unfortunately most of these attacks here in the UK seemed to be linked with "honour attacks". Quite where the honour is in throwing acid in someones face I do not see.

**subHaan Allah, Allaho Akbar...a lady with the biggest heart in the world.

but, having said that, he must be given life without parole...he must have his whole life to ponder over the kindness of the lady and repent all his life...in the jail!!!**

Re: Iranian acid attack victim spares her attacker of the same fate

You cant go market and ask for a gallon of strong acid in west. In Pakistan atleast you can buy liters of Acid from Market.

Re: Iranian acid attack victim spares her attacker of the same fate

You can, although a 3 litre bottle of bleach would be cheaper.
