Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

Good.

The European Union embargo on Iranian oil will only come into effect in six months, but the leadership in Tehran wants to act first: Exports to Europe are set to be halted immediately. It is a move which could mean added difficulties for struggling economies in southern Europe.

It’s a move which has tit-for-tat written all over it, but one which could nonetheless have a serious impact: The Iranian government wants to present a bill to parliament this weekend calling for an immediate halt to oil deliveries to Europe. The move, with most reports citing the Iranian news agency Mehr, has come about in response to the EU agreement to impose sanctions against Iran, which were announced earlier this week.

The sanctions banned any new contracts for buying oil from Iran, but allowed existing deals to continue until July in order to give countries time to find other sources. But that process is now at risk after the latest move from Tehran, a step the Iranian government had already threatened.

“If this bill is passed, the government will be forced to stop selling oil to Europe before the actual implementation of their sanctions,” said Emad Hosseini, spokesman for the Iranian parliament’s energy commission, reportedly said. The bill is set to become law on Sunday.

The EU sanctions allow for oil deliveries from Iran until July 1. Any pre-empting of this timescale by Tehran could prove problematic for countries like Italy, Greece and Spain, who would need to urgently find new suppliers.

China, meanwhile, a major importer of Iranian oil, has also criticized the EU sanctions. The Xinhua news agency quoted the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday as saying: “To blindly pressure and impose sanctions on Iran are not constructive approaches.”

Many members of the EU are now heavily dependent on Iranian oil. Some 500,000 barrels arrive in Europe every day from Iran, with southern European countries consuming most of it. Greece is the most exposed, receiving a third of all its oil imports from Iran, but Italy too depends on Iran for 13 percent of its oil needs. If this source were to dry up abruptly, the economic conditions in the two struggling countries could become even worse.

Already on Wednesday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned of the economic consequences of the EU’s planned embargo. Stopping deliveries from the world’s fifth largest producer could drive up the price of oil by 20 to 30 percent.

And the prices of different types of oil did rise on Thursday, albeit only slightly. In the morning, the cost of a barrel of North Sea Brent Crude was $110.73, 92 cents more than on Wednesday. The price of a barrel of WTI from the US was up 81 cents at $100.21.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

It's not really anything more than a symbolic move. Let's say that China buys 1000 barrels per day and Europe buys 500.

Let's say that Saudia Arabia makes 750 a day and Iran Makes 750 a day. If China used to buy 500 from Saudia, and 500 from Iran, and Europe bought 250 from Saudi and 250 from Iran, this now means that China will buy all 750 from Iran and 250 from Saudia, leaving the 500 remaining in Saudi for Europe.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

why do you think china is obligated or inclined to make up the difference? in your example, you assume saudi arabia is incapable of servicing a higher demand. or perhaps you assume iran would entice china with a heavily discounted price.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

I'm not saying that China is obligated to, but the effect of Iran not selling oil to Europe is that there will be be less demand for Iranian oil - (because European demand will be taken out of the equation). Because prices of commodities are higher when demand is higher, this means that Iranian oil will be slightly cheaper than oil from elsewhere. Any country that can buy oil from Iran (such as China) will then switch to save money.

This means that the countries that are no longer selling as much to China (or other Iranian customers) will then have the capacity from their existing production freed up to meet European demand.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

Actually, this article on forthcoming oil sanctions explains it best. Without the US and European markets, China will be the only major customer left. Since Iran would then desperately need Chinese purchases, China would be able to negotiate cheaper prices as it would have power as the sole possible major customer. So Iran is going to lose money, sooner, by pre-empting the European sanctions by banning exports to Europe.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

^^^ True, but the question is can these sanctions bring down ayatollahs dictatorship in Iran & the answer is probably no.

Btw, its not just China, but India too wants Iranian oil.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

How is bringing down the ayatollahs relevant? Removal of the sanctions is not conditional on removal of the Iranian government - they are dependent on Iran complying with the EU's demands on its nuclear programme.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

It should still affect Europe, as they're relying on having 6 months until America's sanctions take effect. If Iran moves preemptively they could seriously cripple the already hurting European economies. Also, there's a flipside to this situation: if China can demand Iranian oil at lower prices, then the countries selling to Europeans can demand higher prices, and the Europeans will have to pay, even if it hurts their economies.

Re: Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe

It would be a good step if the iranians halt the supply to the Europeans pre emptively. There's another news today that American marine base is going towards the Persian gulf. The situation is getting tense.

Intense takleef for amreeka and its cronies..!!! :)

TEHRAN — Trade between Iran and China soared by 55 percent on year to exceed 45 billion dollars in 2011, Tehran's envoy to Beijing was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Ambassador Mehdi Safari said in Beijing that the annual trade figures showed a 16 billion-dollar increase in commercial ties with China since 2010, the official IRNA news agency reported.

China is Iran's top trade partner, with economic ties expanding in recent years partly thanks to the withdrawal of Western companies in line with sanctions against the Islamic republic over its contentious nuclear drive.

The Asian economic giant has also significantly strengthened its presence in Iran's oil and gas sector by signing a series of contracts worth up to 40 billion dollars in the past few years, in place of Western firms.

Iran is the third largest provider of oil to China.

China defended its economic and oil trade with Tehran as legitimate after the European Union imposed sanctions on the oil exports of the Islamic republic, which provides 11 percent of China's oil imports.
