Iranian refineries need structural upgrades, EOR, etc, and it lacks technology because the EU & N.A have placed sanctions upon it. Technologically, Iran is not up to date but is catching up very fast. Your question was more pertinent to technology rather than industriousness.
You did not tell us how much gasoline (petrol) Iran imports? For FY06, Iran's refinery capacity was 1.5 bbl/d, while the consumptions for the same period stood at 1.6 bbl/d, which means that it imported only 0.1 bbl/d. You also did not tell us about the NIOC refinery projects.

US invaded Iraq to control the energy outflows. The key objectives were to: topple Saddam (which they did); control energy outflow (which they failed miserably); and leave the scene without any problems (another failure). It was not a mistake on part of Iraq that US forced its way in to seize the oil, and in the process brought destruction to the land. Now answer your own questions and ask yourself if Iraq really has been 'liberated'. Iraqis lived a far better life under the dictator Saddam, than what the current gov't & USA has brought upon them.

People who claim that some grand-iose Iranian history automatically makes them strong are gravely mistaken. Darius the Great of Iran was leading a different people in different times. People will laugh at you if you equate Ayatullahs or Ahmadenejat to Darius the great.
No one is equating anyone to anybody. How different were the people of past times to the modern times? Do you know the local Iranian demographical statistics? It appears as though that majority of present day Iranian are of Persian descent (meaning that their lineage has been descending since ancient times), followed by Azeris (who also lived in the same region since ancient times). So, yes, they are most likely to share the same characteristics & traits.
You think modern day Egyptians would be considered industreous just because a different people and different race constructed pyramids in the area now ruled by Hosni?
Pyramids were built by foreign slaves, not local Egyptians. There was nothing industrious about it - it was forced labor. Industriousness is calculated by measuring the productivity & efficiency. Do you know the economic equation for productivity & efficiency? Egyptians were never an industrious people, whether it be modern day Egyptians or from ancient times.
These traits are passed down genetically, from generation to generation. Why do you think that majority of the (physically) hard-working athletes in USA are black people? Why do most of the black men in USA look so big & strong/naturally built? Its because they were slaves for centuries - it was a genetic trait passed down generation to generation that enabled them to be stronger, to do hard physical labour. Go study the osteology of African Americans in comparison with non-African Americans, and see the results for yourself. Black Americans have wider bone structures.
This is like you would claim to be a heart surgeon just because your dada jaan (grandfather) was the top surgeon of Lahore.
If you want to be treated as a heart surgeon, then you have to do your schooling, and your own training preferably from the Western countries (UK, US etc). Only then you will get that status of surgeon.
The same way modern day nations have to do their own work. In fact most of the time a modern nation makes a mistake when it talks too much of their grand history. Look at Afghanistan for near to home example.
