Iran offers surplus power from nuclear plants to India

NEW DELHI: **Iran on Thursday sought Indian support in its nuclear standoff with the United States, saying it was ready to supply electricity to power-hungry India using nuclear technology.
“Iran intends to generate 20,000 MW of electricity from nuclear plants and can supply surplus electricity to India via Pakistan,”** said Danesh Jafri, the visiting Iranian minister for economic affairs and finance.
Speaking at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Iranian minister sounded optimistic about the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline. He said his country was waiting for India and Pakistan to resolve their bilateral commercial issues.
He dismissed the suggestion that the proposed gas pipeline had stalled because of US pressure. “Opposition may come from anywhere, but we can act despite such pressure,” he said.

Why should India depend on any foreign source for power? Whether oil or nuclear power, it makes no difference - foreigners can blackmail or over charge us.
India should simply concentrate on building our own power stations: nuclear as well as hydro. We must also study some of the river connections

what if after doing everything, power is still not generated in sufficient quantities??..Or, after having attained self sufficiency in power, if electricity is available at a cheaper rate from outside than locally produced ones?...Then we better import from outside. Just like cement that is being imported from pakistan now!. Such measures not just improve bilateral relations, but also help in controlling inflation. Even if you end up depending too much, then it also means that the suppliers are also depending too much on you(as a consumer of their electricity )

I am skeptical about Daily Times but if the news is true then I feel pretty sad for Iran. I mean, come on, indians dumped you [iranis] like a cheap rundi when backing out of IPI pipeline when US dangled them some grapes and they will allow india to get nuclear power from iran?

pakistani papers should look at the map before publishing crap like this. since iran does not have a boundry with india, electricity generated in iran has to be transmitted through pak transmission lines. india is never going to agree to this.

and how was Iran going to supply oil to India? was that all "talk" too?

iran, pak and india were all involved in the negotiation over gas pipeline. needless to say, iran could not transmit gas to india through pak territory without approval of pak. same is the case with electricity transmission. since pak is not involved in the negotiation, iran cant sell electricity to india.

the original indo-iranian plan was to lay undersea pipelines until pak offered an easier less costly get out( this was a major component of the pak indo peace negotiations as india has control of kashmiri water) until unclesam told india not to go ahead. india has been stalling ever since, their eventual decision will impact on the kashmir issue
