Iran: Nose Job Capital Of World

(CBS) Iran’s strict Islamic dress code has backfired in at least one big way.
Some young Iranian women are more obsessed with their appearance than their counterparts in the West.

And, as CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports, they’re lining up in record number to improve on the look nature gave them with cosmetic surgery.

The most popular form of plastic surgery in America is liposuction, but in Iran, where the female form is kept largely under wraps, women prefer to spend their money where they can show it off.

So Iran, where the morality police used to confiscate eyeliner and lip gloss, is now the nose job capital of the world.

“A Western nose is more beautiful,” says one young woman in Farsi.
At a medical center, where a group of women wait for their friend to come out of surgery, portraits of classical Iranian beauties hang on the wall. But the Persian nose, it seems, is out of style.

Inside the operating room, Dr. Hossein Heidar lifts and shortens.
“The hot look,” he says, is inspired by Hollywood.

Women shopping for new noses, Heidar says, arrive with photos of Jennifer Lopez.

A picture perfect nose costs around $1,500.

Photographer Newsha Tavakolian is planning a book on Iranian women. The nose craze, she says, started with satellite TV from the West.

“Everyone saw how the Western women, they have very small nose and look almost like Barbie, and the Iranian women, they see them and they say, ‘Oh, I want to look like them,’” says Tavakolian. “They want to make their nose small.”

But it’s not only women. There are lots of bandaged men on the streets too.
“Iranians in general have big noses and that’s one of the reasons why this surgery is so popular,” says Ali Bahrami in Farsi.

Bahrami insists he had the operation for medical purposes, but the before and after pictures tell a different story.

And best of all, Heidar says, all this nipping and tucking is not un-Islamic.
“Plastic surgery is better appearance for people, and I think God like this,” he says.

So in conclusion, they’re insecure about their roots (they want a “Western nose” which means they’re ashamed of being Iranian?)

they’re superficial (the plastic surgery)

and they’re delusional (“God likes surgerY”)

Something like that. They have a hard time accepting they're a mixture of Arab and Mediterranean stock, not Central Asian like Pakistan. I guess they want to look more West European and wish they were Central Asian. I think that they wear Hijab a lot, of course this leaves the nose exposed, as the article points out, though I think it's more to do with seeing Western actresses on TV.

I think this wud be quite a shock to our fellow Pakis who like to think they’re more Iranian than Pakistani :hehe:

^^ Very good, a Paki that realizes the absurdity of acting Indian and licking other countries bums. Independence was achieved in 1947 to all the dumb Pakis out there, it's about time you achieved mental independence from the surrounding countries too. Fortunately I think such people are a minority, and I suspect this is a negative legacy of Partition with the influx of insecure Dravidian genes that has led to some Pakis associating themselves to other countries in a self hate fest.

People from that region (Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey) have very harsh and bland features, sadly they can't do anything about it because nosejobs and plastic surgery looks unnatural, they might get a button-nose but it wont go with the rest of their face, it looks unnatural as though something is missing and it tends to make them look older..

I know a few Iranians who have had nose jobs and they looked better prior to the nosejobs, they got a Caucasian nose but they still don't look Caucasian.

Long straight noses are elegant, I'll admit longer noses are more prone to bending from pressure over the years (sleeping posture, boxing) and there's nothing wrong with striaghtening a few lumps but chisseling half your nose away is ewww.

Iranians (and some Afghans) have been brainwashed from a young age to think they’re Aryan to such a degree that they’ve really started believing they are Caucasians and they’ll try and change anything that doesn’t support that… Guys yes you are pale but you are not Caucasian.

I guess not everyone can be hot and pretty like Pakistanis.

rr I agree, I don't know why any Paki would want to be like any of our neighbours because we're clearly the best looking in our region whether we're olive, wheatish or light brown..

We have linguistic simialrities with our eastern neighbour because they adopted our language but similarities end there..

Our eastern neighbours constantly look like they need a bath and our western neighbours have harsh/bland features..

I don't know why Iranians want to be White either because as harsh/bland as they might look I don't see the fascination in wanting to be raw pink with piss stained hair.

The only cosmetic surgery some Paki women need is hair laser removal and maybe boob job and bigger lips (upturned lips are hottt!!!).

Personally I don't really buy into the thought Iranians are much fairer than Pakis, though Afghans are generally. There's good evidence for this. Regardless, I think it's just insecure types that claim the foreign origin thing. It's reasonably easy to decipher where a person is from by looking at a picture of them. Example the Indian Pashtuns many of them have Dravidian features, but somehow they claim paternal Pashtun ancestry which is kind of silly. Surely in such a case the ethnic group is Dravidian rather.

Lol, this is a true statement. Makes me laugh, even more so now that genetics have proved all these people are just Turkic/Mediterranean type groups and not from Central Asia. You still get the die hards believing it, but hey no harm, even the Indians believe they're Aryan :D.

^^To be honest I don't have a problem with cosmetic surgery, so long as people aren't doing it to be dishonest, find a partner, and then revert back to their old ways (eg with liposuction weight is put back on usually), or with some sort of reshaped nose, and the partner finds out his kids have big noses, when he thought he was getting small nosed kids etc.

I think PP makes a good point about all this Aryan conditioning though with Iranians, even they named their country after Aryan, so pre-conditioned are they to live up to this white, caucasian ideal, when in fact, they're not white on average, and not in fact Aryan (depending on the definition which is usually central asian). I bet when they named Iran (last century was it), they didn't foresee Watson & Crick discovering the DNA helix and then the unravelling of people's genetic past through Y chromosomes :D Oh what a twist of fate, but funny all the same.
