Feb. 15 (Bloomberg) – A fire during evening prayers at a mosque in central Tehran killed at least 59 people and injured about 250, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported, citing city police chief Brigadier General Morteza Talaie.
The fire may have started when a cloth veil worn by a woman worshipper caught fire after brushing against a kerosene heater on an upper floor of the Arg Mosque, IRNA reported. A curtain on that floor then caught fire, dropping onto the heads of some males worshipping on a lower floor, according to the account, which cited a report of the investigation.
Arson or terrorism likely have been ruled out, IRNA said. The narrow exits of the mosque may have increased the number of casualties, IRNA said.
