Re: Iqbal's tribute to Guru Nanak

By likening Guru Nanak to Gautham Buddha ... but at the same time placing Guru Nanak as a type of initiate of Buddha shows that he is saying ... Become the fertile soil that grows from the rain of enlightenment ... then when you are enlightened - after that you become the rain for others to grow in a similar manner.

It is as if there was no true candidate between Buddha and Nanak Ji ... that the home land would produce ... who would qualify as equals to them ...

Re: Iqbal’s tribute to Guru Nanak

Between Buddha and Nanak comes Rama ji:

Iss Dais Mein Huwe Hain Hazaron Malak Sarasht
Mashoor Jin Ke Dam Se Hai Dunya Mein Naam-e-Hind

Hai Raam Ke Wujood Pe Hindustan Ko Naaz
Ahl-e-Nazar Samajhte Hain Uss Ko Imam-e-Hind

Re: Iqbal’s tribute to Guru Nanak

No … these are two different poems of different styles focusing on different things …

Rama poem focuses on the royalty, honour and fortitude of Rama in a nobility sense and praises India for producing many people like him - Heroes.

Whereas the Nanak poem is specifically talking about belief and oneness … as perceived by Buddha and as perceived by Nanak. The style very clear suggests nothing came close to a dogma pertaining to monotheism in India other than from those two personalities. It condemns India for not producing enough like them.

Re: Iqbal's tribute to Guru Nanak

I think the poem related to Nanak talks about Hinduism in between the lines. It says that Buddhism lost in India and there emerged new systems which were unsuccessful to address issues like caste system. Message of Buddha though continued to flourished in foreign lands (Nepal, China?). Hinduism overcome Buddhism in India by adapting many things (even Buddha is an avtar in Hindusim if I'm not mistaken). So, when Nanak came against rituals, caste system.. It was appreciated as a refreshing voice.

Re: Iqbal's tribute to Guru Nanak

Yes ... so does Rama fit in to that picture? Seeing that historically Buddha and Rama date for a similar time period ... circa 5000 BCE

Re: Iqbal's tribute to Guru Nanak

Iqbal puts Rama on a high pedestal, but somehow Rama doesn't fit in the equation of Buddha and Nanak.

The prevalent image of Rama is not that of a preacher as reached to us through Ramayan. He is portrayed as deity (Bhagwan), while the portrayal of Buddha and Nanak are not of deities, in fact, they come as against concept of deity and against rituals. So, probably Iqbal linked Buddha and Nanak on the basis of their preaching portrayal as come through the words 'Paigham e Gautam' and 'Sada Tauheed ki Punjab main'.
