{What is a Remote Access Trojan / Backdoor Software?

*SUMMARY: Remote access Trojan Horses and backdoor software defined. This can compromise your privacy and system stability.*

Malicious software packages exist on the Internet that attempt to gain complete control over computer systems. These programs, sometimes called Remote Access Trojans (RAT) or Backdoor Software (named as the software opens a “back door” on your computer in which it can tell your machine what to do), are sometimes attached to Trojan Horses, viruses, worms, and spyware exploits. If your system is infected, there is virtually no limit to what these programs can do:

  • Use your computer to relay SPAM to other individuals.

  • Steal your passwords and other stored information, such as credit card numbers.

  • Read your e-mail or other private information.

  • Use your computer as a Denial of Service (DoS) agent to attack other computers.

  • Randomly delete files or change system settings.

The result is downright scary. These malware packages can get on your computer in various ways, including:

  • Downloading malicious software from the Internet that looks like something else (Trojan Horse attack)

  • Viewing a website that exploits a vulnerability with your web browser.

  • Merely turning on a vulnerable, unpatched computer and connecting it to the Internet for a period of time.

To help protect yourself against Remote Access Trojans and Backdoor Software, you should install spyware removal tools, use a firewall to help protect yourself, install an anti-virus scanner such as Anti-Vir, and keep your operating system and software up-to-date. }

Re: IP address

Can someone find out who I am?
Possibly, but most likely not without a subpoena. In most cases all that can be easily determined is who the person's ISP is and possibly the state and city the reside in. In some cases with static IP address DSL or business DSL services the ISP provides IP allocation records to the American Registry for Internet Numbers ([http://www.arin.net](http://www.arin.net/)), the non-profit organization responsible for managing Internet numbering resources in North America. As an example SBC used to include customer information in those allocation records, but due to privacy concerns now uses their own information with a customer reference number. For users who want to afford themselves some additional level of anonymity we suggest you read about [internet anonymity](http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/internet-anonymity), [Proxy Servers](http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/proxy-server), and [anonymizing services](http://whatismyipaddress.com/links/index.php?category=Anonymizing+Services).

Re: IP address

IP address is your address on the internet, just like you have a street address for your home. Getting your computer hacked is just like having your house broken into. As long as you have proper protection you are reasonably safe. But if someone does want to get in then they'd get in, just depends on how badly they want to get in and how easy it is to get in. Like if you leave the front door open and ppl can see a juicy item inside then ofcourse someone will come get it.

Re: IP address

As TB said its pretty much possible to hack into the system if one knows your Public IP address.

Secondly hackers could hack anything regardless GIANT or NO-GIANT. It depends on whom you are messing with.. Its always good to have your XP firewall enabled ( at least ) and have a good password to your Windows accounts. Not like father1234.
