Miandad ‘best choice’ as coach of Pakistan cricket team, says Inzamam
Staff Report
LAHORE: Former Pakistan cricket captain Inzamamul Haq Sunday said that the national team should have former batsman Javed Mindad as a coach. The burly batsman, who retired from the shorter version of the game after a disastrous World Cup in the West Indies, gave his view regarding who should be the next coach of the senior team during an interview with Geo TV. Inzamam said Miandad was the ‘best choice’ as coach of the national team.
He said winning or losing was part of a game and one should show patience when the things were not going in the right direction. The veteran player was disappointed with the role of media after the World Cup debacle: “It is the basic role of media to show the reality. I was shocked by the accusations made against me after the World Cup loss. I was really hurt.”
Inzamam said he never behaved in a dictatorial manner. “I was blamed for being very lenient during my whole captaincy career but the World Cup probe committee turned me into a dictator. That could only be accepted if players had complained that I acted like one. This is nothing new in Pakistan cricket. When the team loses, all the blame is put on others, and I was ready for that because it happened in the past,” he said, referring to Pakistan’s equally dismal 2003 World Cup. He siad if he had power as captain it was simply because he was a successful captain and whenever he wanted certain player he convinced selectors to get that player and not through dictatorship. “Being a captain it was my duty to take keen interest in the selection of the outfit.
Replying to a question regarding favoritism in the team, he said spinner Mushtaq Ahmad was selected as a bowling coach because he knew that the team needed a motivator. “If you have a close look at the squads of other international teams, you will realize that those teams are fully equipped with at least 11 to 12 such persons who play their individual role in the performance of the teams. While Pakistan work with only 5 or 6 persons like them. It makes the difference in the spirit of any team competing at the world level.”
Regarding his row with fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, Inzamam said he had no grudge against Shoaib. “Shoaib is a great player. He has a natural talent to destroy any team in the world but injuries are harmful factor in his career. I always wanted him in my team but unfortunately injuries never allowed him to be a permanent part of the team. He has still got the potential to play for at least another three years.”
Giving his remarks about former captain Imran Khan’s opinion that Inzamam was not an aggressive captain, he said aggression depends upon the psyche of a human being. “I have never been aggressive until I am irritated with something. It is my style to lead as a skipper. I have a great respect for Imran but I handle things according to my way.”
Inzamam showed his concern about domestic cricket in Pakistan. “The problem is that our batsmen are not used to playing over good surfaces. When Pakistan play abroad, the bowlers perform well but the batsmen fail. For this sake we must prepare standard turfs at the local level.”
