Miandad ‘best choice’ as coach of Pakistan cricket team, says Inzamam

Staff Report

LAHORE: Former Pakistan cricket captain Inzamamul Haq Sunday said that the national team should have former batsman Javed Mindad as a coach. The burly batsman, who retired from the shorter version of the game after a disastrous World Cup in the West Indies, gave his view regarding who should be the next coach of the senior team during an interview with Geo TV. Inzamam said Miandad was the ‘best choice’ as coach of the national team.

He said winning or losing was part of a game and one should show patience when the things were not going in the right direction. The veteran player was disappointed with the role of media after the World Cup debacle: “It is the basic role of media to show the reality. I was shocked by the accusations made against me after the World Cup loss. I was really hurt.”

Inzamam said he never behaved in a dictatorial manner. “I was blamed for being very lenient during my whole captaincy career but the World Cup probe committee turned me into a dictator. That could only be accepted if players had complained that I acted like one. This is nothing new in Pakistan cricket. When the team loses, all the blame is put on others, and I was ready for that because it happened in the past,” he said, referring to Pakistan’s equally dismal 2003 World Cup. He siad if he had power as captain it was simply because he was a successful captain and whenever he wanted certain player he convinced selectors to get that player and not through dictatorship. “Being a captain it was my duty to take keen interest in the selection of the outfit.

Replying to a question regarding favoritism in the team, he said spinner Mushtaq Ahmad was selected as a bowling coach because he knew that the team needed a motivator. “If you have a close look at the squads of other international teams, you will realize that those teams are fully equipped with at least 11 to 12 such persons who play their individual role in the performance of the teams. While Pakistan work with only 5 or 6 persons like them. It makes the difference in the spirit of any team competing at the world level.”

Regarding his row with fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, Inzamam said he had no grudge against Shoaib. “Shoaib is a great player. He has a natural talent to destroy any team in the world but injuries are harmful factor in his career. I always wanted him in my team but unfortunately injuries never allowed him to be a permanent part of the team. He has still got the potential to play for at least another three years.”

Giving his remarks about former captain Imran Khan’s opinion that Inzamam was not an aggressive captain, he said aggression depends upon the psyche of a human being. “I have never been aggressive until I am irritated with something. It is my style to lead as a skipper. I have a great respect for Imran but I handle things according to my way.”

Inzamam showed his concern about domestic cricket in Pakistan. “The problem is that our batsmen are not used to playing over good surfaces. When Pakistan play abroad, the bowlers perform well but the batsmen fail. For this sake we must prepare standard turfs at the local level.”

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

Javed has a sharp cricketing brain. His man-management and communication skills are debatable however

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

i oppose javed miandad solely because that pepsi parody will become popular again and at some point i will be forced to sit through it and smile

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

:hehe:

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

  • that interview btw was jawab deyh. I have posted it in cricket videos*

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

i dont know why its hard for some ppl to accept the fact that Miandad had a big part in Imran's success. His sharp cricketing brain and onfield tactics mixed with Imran's team management to create the tigers team.

I am fed up of ppl taunting on the way he speaks (btw thats how Allah made his tongue) every time he is mentioned and suggested as a coach. For heaven sake come up with some valid arguments rather than taunting on his speech deficency.

I think Pakistan should have a STRONG manager in addition to Miandad as coach unless PCB is only looking to some one from outside.

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

^ you can’t recognize who I tried to mimic when I wrote the opening lines?
Its not Miandad…

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

I know you are talking about inzi but I am talking in general

PS: I watched that interview too

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

I believe a big majority of 'cricket' followers will agree with you, but unfortunately Miandad has other issues alongwith that which were unexposed (or partly exposed) during Imran's era. Some of it got exposed during 'revolts' against him and more during his stints as coach. He is really horrible in man-management/handling and that is a very important attribute as a 'coach'. His being big mouth is one of things that puts him in company of Rashid Latif (who is better of the two I blv :D) ... anyone remembers his comment about Sehwag (or was it Irfan Pathan) before India visited Pakistan and then we know what happened afterwards (well that is just one example).

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

slightly off topic but I just could n’t resist posting this

Fifty Fifty - Miandad & Marshall

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

Definetely big mouth Javed had a sharp cricketing brain as a player. Does this mean he will have the same brain as a coach?

Also, imagine big mouth applying for a position of national coach of another country - would he really get the job when is likely to face competion from qualified and professional coaches. I don't think so, not even Bangladesh would consider him.

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

Injee, Miandad, Moyo these guys are relics of Pakistan who refuse to accept change thus the reliance on each others mediocrity.

Mi-a-n-dad is all about himself, he has no interpersonal skills thus the in and out policy.

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

^ Inzi, Miandad and MoYo are mediocre???!!!!!
in what respect?

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

Miandad has a good cricketing brain and I think it can be a good decision to make him coach. Also he was a great batsmen so may be he'll make our batsmen play sensibly.

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

Not from a cricketing perspective but as individuals who represent their national team as responsible managers.

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

^ You mean captaincy and coaching. Well don't use blanket statement then. MoYo only captained on a part time basis. Maindad was a good captain. His coaching is a seperate issue. Inzi, well we all know his forte' is batting.
So please don't lump everything together.

Re: Inzi says Miandad is best choice

aaptho jazbaathee hogai, its just a chat forum bhai, chill.

By the way, statement is not restricted to captiancy it encompasses all aspets of the game from being captain, fielder, manager to commentator and that way these guys are mediocre. One more thing, greatness and medicority is measured by theie peers, take a look around and u will see how other players have excelled inother roles while these three gentlemen can never rise above their over protected small worlds.
