Inzamam-ul-Haq has been confirmed as Pakistan’s captain for 2004. His first stint officially ended after Pakistan’s recent tour of New Zealand, but Shaharyar Khan, Pakistan’s chairman, today announced that Inzamam will continue in charge for the rest of the year.

Inzamam’s first assignment of a busy year will be the small matter of a Test and one-day series against India in March and April. Pakistan then tour Malaysia to play Sri Lanka, play a tri-nation series against India and Australia, and then travel to England for the ICC Champions Trophy in September.

It doesn’t stop there. Next up is a home series against Zimbabwe in October, followed by the tricky challenge of a three-Test series and triangular one-day tournament in Australia.

Inzamam, who has played 91 Tests and scored 6,680 runs at 49.85, was appointed captain in September 2003, and led Pakistan to a 1-0 win in the Test series in New Zealand.

“It is a well-thought decision also taken in consultation with Rameez Raja and chairman of selectors, Wasim Bari,” Khan said. “Inzamam led the team well in New Zealand and is showing tremendous improvement in his leadership qualities. He enjoys great respect amongst his team members. The PCB is optimistic that under his leadership, the Pakistan cricket team will continue to make upward progress.”

Inzamam, in a statement said: “I am honoured to have been awarded the job to lead Pakistan this year. My recent experiences have given me valuable insight into the characteristics to be a successful leader. I am confident that I will be able to transfer my recent experience into this year.”

He continued: "I have learnt a lot while playing under brilliant captains like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis. I believe now I am well equipped to take on what is one of the most prestigious jobs in Pakistan sports.

“To me, every series this year will be equally important. But naturally, there will be more focus on the forthcoming series against India which I am sure will produce the highest quality of cricket. My team has worked extremely hard recently and I have no doubt in my mind that if they continue to work with the same dedication and commitment, they will put up a good performance.”

just like rashid latif was made captain for 1 year

neywayz its great news

Sherry will regret his decission. Atleast Moin should be VC if the Aaloo remains captain. The guy has no ambitions for fighting, he is an lazy @##^&%$....thaka howa kahein kaa.

:smack:

chalo iss mein hi Allah ki koi behtari hogi!:flower1:

There was no time to appoint a new captain just before such an important series. Team's equilabrium will deteriorate. Sticking on with Inzi is the only option. The rest is just wordsmithing. Rameez and Bari are not idiots. They have seen the same stuff we have seen on the television. Its better to coach Inzi to bring him up to speed, instead of changing captains again and again. Plus bringing an old horse as captain is not a long-term solution, anyway.

unfair to say this to inzi.
had inzi not been there figthing against bagalees, they certainly would have celebrated their first win in test.

inzi has shown gr8 improvement n can be a good cap. under javed's guidence as there is no replacemnt of experience together they make 200 test and some 14,000 runs in test.

all the best inzi

:nook: Inzi just does not have the qualities of a captain. He may be a great bastmen, but captaincy is something which he is not capable of.

Thats one of the problem, Javed is giving him his "defensive" approach in all areas of game, different situations demand different approach, you can't have "one size fits all". He is a good batsman, no one doubts that, but not a good captain... almost everyone agrees to that too.

gd point. this culture of chaging captains shd stop. + we don hv much choice newayz. so this really is a gd decision. i hope it pays out. there is no reason to believe that he will never learn to be a gd captain by the end of this year, given the fact that he will be playing so many games this year.

in the last odi series, the problem really wasnt his captaincy (althou it was debatable as well to a certain extent); the problem was consistent failure of the top order, failure of our main bowlers and unbalanced lineup. I hope we can rectify these issues n beat the indians, because just "giving them a tough time" (as Miandad is saying) will not be gd enough for the pakistani public, and rightfully so.

I think its a good decision. There was no choice.
Inzi have his job cut out.He has been appointed captain till the end of year and he has to play Indian in Pak,AUS in AUS and ICC Trophy. Tough days are ahead of him.I hope he does well.Onky easy outing he wil have is probably a series against ZIM at home.
