Inzamam receives rousing welcome

By Our Correspondent

MULTAN, May 5: Inzamamul Haq, the Pakistan cricket captain, was accorded a rousing reception when he arrived in his hometown on Thursday. However, a few days ago Inzamam came here on a low-key visit to offer ‘fateha’ at the grave of his mother and inquire after an ailing friend besides distributing sweets on the birth of his third child — a boy — but his ardent admirers wanted to organize a reception in his honour in a befitting manner.

The reception was jointly organized by the district government and the local cricket association.

Although, the gathering to receive the national hero at Multan airport was thin but when the welcome procession entered the city and started passing through the markets, more and more people became part of it.

The traders showered rose petals on Inzamam’s motorcade and garlanded him at various bazaars. After passing through Cantonment bazaar, SP Chowk, Nawan Shehr and Kalma Chowk, the procession reached the Multan Arts Council where Inzamam was crowned in a splendid ceremony.

Later, the Pakistan skipper addressed a gathering of the local business community at the Multan chamber of commerce and industry. He also participated in the ‘guftagu’ programme of the local press club.

Speaking on the occasion, Inzamam said in the present-day competitive cricket, a player had to be fit 100 per cent to find a place in the side. He claimed that it was the decision of the selection committee to overlook paceman Shoaib Akhtar for the coming tour of West Indies.

“Not even physically but a player has to be ‘fit’ in behaviour as well,” he remarked.

Inzamam admitted that fielding was the weakest department of his team and boys had to give special attention to this aspect during the Caribbean tour.

He said spinners would play an important role in the West Indies series given the pitches being currently prepared there.

He reiterated that key to Pakistan’s success lay with teamwork rather than on individual performances. “Pakistan won all those matches India in which each and every player of the team performed.”

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

Three Pakistani players I have admired the most first is Javed for his six and '92 WC Semi-final performace. Saeed Anwar for his 194 and now Inzi the great what a player, what a person unbelieveble...

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

Indeed one of the greatest this land has ever produced.

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

Good man, keep up the good work :k: and don’t get germs from others please.

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

-----------x----vfgh------

He should allow it to simmer down now, otherwise these things shoot straight to the head

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

^ If these things were to get to Inzi's heads, WC '92 was enough I think for him to think too highly of himself, but he is not that kind of a guy.

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

He was not a Capt10 then.

As a Cap10 he has a long way to enter that elite group by proving his metal.
I hope he don’t repeat his lapses seen during the last India series that gives him one match ban.
Right step towards the lesson # 1 Be a worthy leader and set good examples

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

You don't have to be a captain to be "high" ... you know what I mean :D

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

Forget about how he plays and what not, I love the person for his humbleness and the way he starts his conversation before any the ceremony. Such humble and polite fella.

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

although i love the man and i have nothing but the utmost respect for bholay badshah here, but i don't agree with inzi over his comment about how the 'boys' will be influenced by shabi's bad behaviour or such.

the other lads r all grown ups', capable of thinking for themselves and deciding between right and wrong. if 1 of them for instance, does get influenced by shabi den dat is their fault for succumbing to pressure or wat ever 1 mite call it.

u can't leave out players like shabi man, honestly if his performances will help pakistan, which they have done often in the past den really no matter wat, he has to be in de lineup.

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

^^ easy to say that sitting at home.

YES we can leave him. No player is greater than the game and the country. Bohot sar pe charhaa liya. Its time to let them all know, where they actually came from.

Re: Inzamam receives rousing welcome

^^

i don't remember shabi ever saying dat he is greater then the game or our country? it's dumb simply plain dumb to leave some 1 like shabi out of the line up. he is a match winner and if our team will benefit with him in the side then all of the other issues can go in kachrai ka dabha.

come to think of it on comparison, some 1 like shane warne isn't exactly the gr8test role model around. the guy openly humiliates his opponents
{most recent example england hopeful matt prior, during a county game, a derby between sussex and hants}, he ripped it out of him on many occassions, YET a player of his quality walks into the aussie line up after even being banned for drug use. Y coz his performance will help the aussies immensly and ricky unlike inzi is a thinking man's captain. inzi and our the dumb selction committee need to put country 1st.
