Inzamam given option of four openers for England

Bari said he had a detailed discussion with Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq on Wednesday to discuss the formation of the list of players for the England tour.

He said the selection committee has given Inzamam an option of taking four openers to England. “We have also given the names of Taufiq Umar and Muhammad Hafeez alongside two regular openers. It is now up to Inzamam and the team management to decide whether they want to go for it.”

The selectors have also recommended Pakistan A team player Zulqarnain Haider as a second wicket-keeper in the probables’ list.

^ Which two regular openers are they talking about out of Malik, Farhat and Butt.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

Pakistan Thursday named Shoaib Akhtar in their preliminary 21-man squad for next month’s tour of England, marking the fiery fast bowler’s return from injury.

The 30-year-old, plagued by numerous injuries in his eight-year international career, has resumed bowling after undergoing twin knee surgery in February this year.
He had not played for Pakistan since breaking down during the final Test against India in Karachifour months ago.

“We need our best fast bowlers for the tour of England so Akhtar is back,” chief selector Wasim Bari told AFP.
“But he will not be an automatic choice and will have to prove his fitness in the conditioning camp.”

Akhtar, who has 165 wickets in 42 Tests and 199 in 129 one-day internationals, is seen as Pakistan’s main weapon on the tour of England, where Pakistan have not lost a series since 1982.

Akhtar Tuesday vowed to give his best on the England tour, claiming he was fully fit. He took 17 wickets in Pakistan’s 2-0 win over England when they toured here last year.

Pakistan are scheduled to play four Tests and five one-day games on their tour of England, with the first Test starting at Lord’s in London on July 13.

Akhtar’s new ball partner Mohammad Sami also staged a comeback after poor form axed him from the team’s tour of Sri Lanka in March this year.

Taufiq Umer returned from the sidelines and was named among three openers in the preliminary squad, in what Pakistani officials hope is a solution to an ongoing top order problem.

Bari said he hoped the openers would rise to the task.
“You need batsmen with good technique as the ball moves in English conditions so we need very good openers who can cope under the conditions,” said Bari, a former Pakistan captain and wicket-keeper.

The preliminary squad will assemble in Lahore for a conditioning camp from May 25 to June 5.

Former South African player Jonty Rhodes will act as a fielding coach in stage two of the camp, to be held from the second week of next month.

“After consultation with captain Inzamam-ul Haq and coach Bob Woolmer we will announce the 16-member squad on June 9,” said Bari.

Preliminary squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq, Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Taufiq Umer, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Faisal Iqbal, Shahid Afridi, Bazid Khan, Asim Kamal, Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Asif, Rao Iftikhar, Mohammad Sami, Umar Gul, Zulqarnain Haider.

Oye ey ki post keeta?

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

Dhobi_Bhai - Rao Iftikhar is in the prelimanary squad, what are we going to do about him?

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

replace him with our beloved chacha Arshad :naraz:

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

They will probably do that for the ODI’s.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

^ it should be taya arshad…show some respect lads:hoonh:

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

I think he should go with Yasir Hameed and Salman Butt as openers…and Sami is backkkk :yahoo:

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

It's too early for Sami's comeback. He should be made to sit out at least a couple of series (just like Shoaib Akhtar) so that he rethink his approach can work on his bowling. If we pick him now, then he'd still think it's his birthright to be in the Pak team.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

I think Moh'd Sami will do good in England, look at Sajid Mahmood, he plain sucks yet he was taking wickets cuz of his pace.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

I think Sajid Mahmood is a decent bowler. I mean, there are better bowlers on their team (Flintoff and Harmison come to mind), but you can't "blame" everything on the English conditions.

Yes, the conditions are exceptionally favourable for seamers, but there's more to getting wickets than just the good conditions in England. Although I would love to see Mohammad Sami back to his 'old' self again, realistically it has not much to do with a "slump"... I think (as mentioned above), it has a lot to do with his attitude towards the selection and team.

For him to perform well, he needs to go in with the mentality that he earned the selection and not the other way around (i.e. the pcb "earned" by selecting Sami).

I kinda hope he gets selected though... I know majority of pakistan cricket fans have been itching to see him back in his ruthless form. Also, It'd be interesting how Taufeeq Umar plays , considering he's selected...

He seems pretty legit.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

So you believe Sajid Mahmood was only taking wickets because of his pace and nothing else? Sami suppose to be quicker then Mahmood so why hasn't he been consistent and taking more wickets, afterall he has played more test matches and has got more international expereince? It's just not pace but what you do with it makes a difference.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

He was talking about bowling IN ENGLAND dude, cool down :D

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

As expected freaking PCB selectors are now eating opium instead of smoking it.

They freakin keep brining those budhay and with no talent player whom we have already seen failed at international level. What the f*ck is wrong with these slectors. Why can't they have some faith in the young guns.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

^ Ditto. We will get to see more lost causes play musical chairs in England. Yippee. What I don't understand is apart from Butt, Pakistan has not been able to produce a single quality opener even on the domestic level in the past 5 years. Still the same old Hameed, Taufeeq, Nazir, Farhat bandwagon.

Re: Inzamam given option of four openers for England

My brother Iconoclast,

Thanks for sharing the news. I'm really "fed up" of this option of "four" openers. Since the last couple of years, we have used more than four pairs and I don't know how many different opening combination will make a successful trial for the selection of "PERMANENT" openers. It's just too bad that in such a talented pool of crops, we are having great trouble to find "two" solid openers for our Pak team.
I think for the Eng tour, we can't use Shoaib Malik + Farhat combination anymore. It's very true that Farhat is a natural opening batsman but Malik, you gotta be kidding me!! And not to forget, the English pitches. It's like trying to ask Waqar Younis to be our batting coach.

I think Salman Butt should be given one more chance since he's been in the team for almost 2 years with quite a consistency. Our bowling dept. looks pretty formidable but our batting got to get better and in shape or else Harmison or Freddie will roll us down in their gears. What do the fellow guppies think??? Also, I think Asim Kamal should be added in the squad. He's one hard working cricketer.
