Does it make sense to send out an invite a few days before a party? Or does it mean you were an afterthought to that host?
Is this typical for desi dawats?
Got an engagement invite about 5 days before the engagement. I guess the girl doesn’t mean harm, tells us the invites were delayed by the card making service. Not the first time I’ve heard this excuse.
Why not just set up a guest list ahead of time? Send out invites a month ahead of time?
I wouldn't necessarily consider it an 'after thought'. In the hustle bustle of preparations and arrangements, cards can get delayed and if not, sometimes it can be a slip of mind too , or perhaps later they figure they can accomodate more guests than they intially thought they could, or may have had a family discussion and concluded it would be disrespectful if a certain friend/family member was not invited. I would honor the invitation, if it was minutes or hours that would have to take deep consideration, but 5 days is a good enough notice, not long enough but will work if not conflicting with other plans.
How long have they been planning the engagement for? It could be they planned it within weeks...

Why worry about whether or not you were an after-thought?
At the end of the day she invited you........either go and be cordial and hope that you might make a new friend there or send your regrets and place your ego before your social life.
i once got invited a day before a wedding.. i still went seems normal here.. a close family member is getting married in 2 weeks and i was only told last week about it.. i would say go and don’t worry about all the other things! enjoy.. desi gatherings have delicious food
Don't take it personally, many people these days invite people with short notice. That way the event remains exclusive, plus organising a party can be tough and people forget and then remember at the last minute. Go to the party and enjoy, you have been kindly invited.
