Investing Advice

Please what is a good investment this day and age with unstable economy. Keep in mind this investment is for the benefit of 2 children, to eventually pay for college/uni expenses. If you wanted to invest 15-20K would it make sense to put it all in Roth IRA or education 529 accounts? I am not sure if I got the name right, but the accounts that you open in your child’s name and they can only touch it once they are I believe 18. Please advise good ways to invest.

My hubby seems to think it is a good idea instead to buy some land/plot back home and sell it when kids get older but I do not agree as we live in the US and not like it is easy to buy through a trusted person…

Re: Investing Advice

hi
for investment i suggest u to buy defense certificate its start from 25000 rs to 100000.
for e.g 50000 rs certificate after 10 years it gives u 213000 + ur investment amount.

or else buy Gold

ur husband ideal is gud but if u live in US and want u buy a land then i will not recommend u to do that.

Re: Investing Advice

striker, what is a defence certificate? That's exactly why I do not want to buy any land outside of where we live. Any advice on what to invest in here? Like 529 account or mutual funds or what not.

Re: Investing Advice

Two things I'd suggest:

1) Buy gold. The value of gold is not gonna come down either way. Its a safe investment.

2) Get into stocks but after really studying them very well.

I've few colleagues of mine who are indians basically. They wake up 6-7 am and start looking at the asian/europeon market. By 9 am they get an idea of what can be the best deal for them when markets open at DOW or NASDAQ. And then they make their decision and go for it. I've really seen them earning a lot.
Downside: There's always a chance to lose esp if market crashes. But you have to be proactive to read that earlier.

3) Only go for buying land in Pak if you have a strong contact there who can take care of it all the time. There are land mafias who can snatch your investment and you wont be able to do anything. Trust me, we've lost a couple of very good plots just like that.

Re: Investing Advice

Aro-Sheen.
Do visit savings.gov.pk u can find all the information about the defence certificate.
if this link is not working then u can search on google with this keyword "defence certificate"
i paste the complete link but it won't allow me to paste the complete link.
investment in Pak on land its very risky due to mafia ganag.

Afro if u are really into investment then either buy mutual funds or gold or if you know how to deal with stocks you can invest in them. If you want to buy a stock observe them for at least 3 mnths and then start investing. Start listening to business radio it helps a lot and give lot of advises in how to invest in current market.
Buying a property in Pakistan is a big problem; my BIL bought some property and some one claimed it was there. So there are not only one but many problems in buying a property in Pakistan. First you have to a have a very trusted person in Pakistan who can buy property for you, because if property's price goes up then the main fight will begin. Just be careful.

Re: Investing Advice

buy some good mutual funds and forget about them. US has many great fund managers. look into Fairholme, FPA, First Eagle, etc. sometimes I wish I lived in the US just so I had access to these amazing managers.

if you don't agree with active management, then buy some index funds.

gold or buying land in Pakistan are not prudent investments, imho.

Re: Investing Advice

Salam,

Madam invest in real estate, make a house in Pakistan, rent a portion of it and keep some possession with yourself. Its value will automatically increase with the passage of time and u will enjoy the benefits of rent and all ur cost will be covered in 8-10 years after that its all benefit. But invest somewhere thats worthy of it..

Another good option is that purchase some gold and it will always rise slowly..

Stocks exchange is also good if one understands it..

Or buy a plot in DHA and it will automatically multiply several times in coming years..

Fi Amaan Allah

Re: Investing Advice

Just a suggestion, when thinking abt investing never put all ur eggs in one basket. DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY. That's the only worth while thing I learnt in my Finance degree
I know it's difficult having a full fledged family life and then saving thru different channels but with technology it's far much easier. And try 2 evaluate different options like for e.g. instead of paying cash for sum real estate in pakistan buy some thing on installment. There are a couple of reliable/reputable constructing companies / builders who have websites and ez payment options for Expats. If u want 2 save in stocks buy the long term ones so that u dun loose sleep over them or get a fund manager if u wanna trade.

p.s. I hv just observed this so it's just a personal opinion, no matter how u save/invest always remember to pay zakat on it. I have seen my savings growing when I do that.

If you are thinking of investing money in real estate for your children, consider that full ownership of land in Pakistan requires the owner to live on the land and have title to it. If you are living outside Pakistan you will not have one of two things. In addition, transferring land to your children, in case you pass away, can be a real headache, take lots of time and money. If the ownership gets disptued by someone, your children may not see the money ever. They will need to get National ID cards, hire lawyers and process applications that can require bribing officials, even when one is not trying to do anything illegal.

bob

the best and safest is to buy gold !
