Re: Investigative reporting

NEWSLINE, the herald (partly) and The Friday Times (partly) have all had histories of investigative reporting..most of the corruption scandals of Zia-ul Haq, BB ..Nawaz Sharif and now Mushs government have come out through those papers. Unfortunately it is harder and more dangerous to report against a fauji government, the midnight knock tends to follow which in turn leads to peopel disappearing for indefinite amounts of time.

Consider Ayub Khan..his families corruption only came out near the end of his reign and that too through a Western journalist...similarly with Zia ..the tens of millions of dollars siphoned of from the Afghan "jihad" were reported..but the papers that did paid a very heavy price (the Frontier Post in particular) ..so even now if you ask people ..some honestly believe Zia was not corrupt the same way they think Mush isn't..

Re: Investigative reporting

You got it right.

No one exposes the rulers when they know they and their familes will 'disappear', esp with the Faujis.

Re: Investigative reporting

Well! faujis could be doing bad stuff. How about sarhadi Mau-lunatics? Big beards are hiding big bellies filled with haram-ka-maal-chicken.

However corruption of minds in the name of Pushtoon, Baluch, or Mohajir nationalism is the worst kind. It is resulting in so much chaos that faujis have to be brought in to control the things.

Ultimately it is up to all of us. If we create the peace in the country, faujis will go back to barracks.

Re: Investigative reporting

It was an Urdu daily I dont remember the name right now which published news about the former cheif minister of sindh that he is a cross-dresser and normally "performs" wearing a "saree".That was yellow journalism to some but ali mohammed maher was removed after some months may that was one of the reasons for his dismissal

Re: Investigative reporting

lol..thats true syedpk..his lifestyle caused quite the commotion in sindh..anyways anti is making excuses for the inexcusable..many countries have crisises ..but the army doesn't intervene..

It's just pure badshahgardi by pro-establishment people who look down on the average person in Pakistan and use excuses like nazaria zaroorat. The advantage with even badly managed democracy is the transparency that comes with it..nobody would have heard of surrey mansion under a dictatorship. Most people don't know about the huge mansions earned by Army procurement officers or how the Humayun Akhtars of the world became crorepatis in dollars or how much money Fauji officers have made in plush assignments like in critical to defence organisations like Pak Ordinance Factory.

The politicians and Faujis made rich by Zia in 1985 caused almost all of the corruption in the 1990's (the same way Ayubs 60's ones messed up the 70's) and similarly I am sure the politicians made by Mush in 2002 and 2005 will in turn haunt our country after 2007. People may argue that Mush has allowed freedom to investigate..but if you most journalists in Pak ..they will say thats a lie..

It was those brave journalists like Zamir Niazi and Razia Bhatti, brave writers of newsline and the frontierpost in the 1980's who exposed most of the past corruption, I am sure the new generation of the Rauf Kiasras and other journos will continue that task..

Re: Investigative reporting

well giving news or reporting corruption and cathing red handed are two different things thats why they are able to supress such brave people.

consider if someone came up with video recording by going under cover, I am sure that will be more effective. and it can be aired through international media and avoid the security concerns about such person.

How many people read newspaper in Pakistan, and even some reader do get this info will not be effective cause the credibility is challenged and the issue just go in dark after some time.

but even uneducated people watch TV so this will be more effective and they can remember about such leader or officer.

any thing like this?? under process or happened in past?

Re: Investigative reporting

How conveniently you forgot BB and her 50% chummy Zardari?
