Intrusive thoughts

Do you experience intrusive thought?

If yes, how often? What is the main theme or content of these thoughts?

And what do you do about them? I.e. do you dismiss them? Try to ignore them? Or do you practise something to get rid of them?

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Yep, i get out of the house.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Yes.
Very often.
Usually I don't dismiss them.I ponder over them , get frustrated & annoyed.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

I used to meditate on the Sufi principle of taming the ego, you do that by doing breathing exercises and praying 5x a day and contemplation of Allah. Helps a lot, after a while you begin to think like how you have trained your body and mind. Really interesting.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

And that works?

Why don’t you dismiss them? Or can’t you?

That sounds interesting indeed. Would like to know more about this Sufi principle.

Baaqi, none of you mentioned the kind of intrusive thoughts you experience. Are they too dark and to mention out loud? :hmmm:

Re: Intrusive thoughts

I would sometimes wonder when i was in my teens "Wouldn't it be cool if i were a girl, then i'd get to look at myself naked" hahahaha

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Yeah, it distracts you. I went to the gym this morning in fact cuz i woke up and was feeling sad. I feel 10x better now and can use the day to function.

Mcpendo, for once I have to agree with him. The whole 5x namaz thing - but SUFI style - works really well. It doesn't work if you just go through the motions cuz you have to. If you use that time to rather, meditate, and train your mind to think the way you want it to, then yeah, it works really well, and just like you get an addiction for good food, work-outs, you also develop an addiction for namaz. I used to be like that back in the day before I fell off the bandwagon, and it probably got me through times that were 10x worse than I am in now. I need to get back to the prayer rug, for sure.

I knew this kid in college, what an inspiration he was. He would do his namaz like clockwork, there was just no stopping him. And he was the most calm and gentle person I've known to date.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

MCpendo that sounds really nice...could you give us some tips on how to achieve that please.

yep,I'm not too good at dismissing stuff .

Re: Intrusive thoughts

XD

Will definitely look it up now :k:

Ok. What kind of thougths are those then?

Re: Intrusive thoughts

I’d rather have them stay in the dark corners of my mind :emmy:

Re: Intrusive thoughts

The intrusive thoughts I usually have are:

  1. When I am aroundsomebody else, all of a sudden thought will pop up in my mind such as: *what if I start beating this person. Or slap his/her face...
    *I usually laugh it off.

  2. When I walk under balconies, bridges etc I keep getting images in my head of them collapsing and crushing me.
The whole time I am walking under a heavy construction, I stay alert :|

  3. Or while waiting for the train, the thought that shows up is: what if I all of a sudden jump when train is close.
I just ignore this one too.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Ok, just give me a hint of the content then, agressive?

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Those are such innocent thoughts :bummer:

Mine are along these lines :hinna:

Re: Intrusive thoughts

I do get your kinda intrusive thoughts too …like while on a bridge as to it might break & then what will happen.
When a car gets too close…instantly strikes me of the accident when my brother passed away & then feels like every other car is gonna hit ours.
oh and a very common one I used to get long back was counting tiles or trying to make sure I take even steps :hehe: this was weird but I dont get this now.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Actually the context of the thoughts does not matter.
Its the frequency of the thoughts and the degree of disturbness they cause which distincts a 'healthy' person from a 'troublesome'.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

In my case I don't dismiss them & they are very frequent too.But I just dont even bother trying to dismiss them anymore.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Other people, Why you no share your darkest deepest thoughts?

Re: Intrusive thoughts

Meditation.
S'the best way :)

Re: Intrusive thoughts

I read somewhere on the interweb that we should schedule our thoughts. I have scheduled it for bed time and i sleep on it.

Re: Intrusive thoughts

mmmm I know what you guys mean - but I guess you could say this is kind of like our inner jihad. It doesn't necessarily mean you strive to become a better Muslim person who prays and reads quran, it could also be just being a better, more functional person (not necessarily mutually exclusive)...

Remember, you are not your intrusive thoughts, your darkest desires because hands down every single person has them and the potential for evil BUT you are how you handle them - if you let them control you they will - but its better to try to be mentally strong and dismiss them and mean it...also praying for guidance and help from Allah swt helps a lot. With me duas are the best cure for everything :D
