well I graduated in Jan 2000 for MBA with specialization in Information Technology Management from IIUI Pakistan, joined NUST as Program Coordinator and Faculty Member, that job came with lot of power but my creative mind did not feel comfortable with the routine office work. so quit and joined Web Dynamics as Manager Tech & Marketing, where I have been quite succesful and got polished in three areas;
i) 2D Animation (e-cards - more than 5000 so far for almost all the sites of these kind, Web TV commercials, Movies)
ii) e-Marketing (Running Ad campaigns for various products on google and overture and with Targeted emails n stuff)
iii) Requirement Analysis & Solution Design (Task force Managemnt & File sharing system, thats what i actualy implemented in Web Dynamics, we dont have any paper work :~) we assign all the dutied thru intranet track n manage them and about 10 type of documents for each project automatically become part of the system, just a click away)
now days I am working on two projects
umru.com; a full feature movie of 'Umru Ayyar' hopefully gonna be the first 2D Urdu Animated Movie of Pakistan with a level of detail much closer to what you see in Disney Land movies, will post some stuff soon on the above site.
Paybyus.com; a site for expatriats to send small cash-gifts of upto 300 USD to any postal address in Pakistan using a credit card. orit can be used to receive your next job payment from abroad.
PS: I am looking for some professional alliances with US n European 2D Animation companies. If you guys working in any of them or know anyone in these companies please do let me know, I Would be thankful for any help in this regard.
Very interesting thread. This is probably the only thread I read fully.
I did my MBA from Multan in 1986. Was awarded Gold Medal and Merit Scholarship. Taught at the same university for 2 years. Came to the UK and did MBA from Imperial College. Started PhD but quit after 6/7 months. It was too boring for me. Started project financing.
In 1993-94, during Bosnia crisis, I got involved in voluntary work raising funds and sending aid to Bosnia. Soon realised due to my full time work, I was not able to give enough time to this cause as much as I wanted to. So joined a Muslim charity full time as Head of Fundraising. Within 2 years, I was appointed Chief Executive of the charity. This gave me the opportunity to serve wherever was suffering - Palestine, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kashmir, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, Sudan and many other countries.
Although, I fully enjoyed the work I was doing (I took my first holiday 6 years after joining my first job in the charity) but family and associated responsibilities were growing and in 1999 started my own little business and thought I was out from the voluntary sector.
But I was wrong. All those projects I encouraged to expand in many countries, started coming to me for help. Initially just gave our own Zakah etc. It then expanded to channelling Zakah etc of friends and relatives to these projects and within a year, here I was again ended up establishing a new organisation, Islamic Aid.
Since 2000, Islamic Aid has alhamdullilah grown to £1.5 million turnover and we are working in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, India, Bangladesh, Iraq etc (recently our relief team was in Bam, Iran for about six weeks, delivering aid to earthquake victims).
Working from my front room, I have to spend, on my business as well as charitable work, up to 18-20 hours a day and “day off” has again disappeared from our dictionary. It is very exhausting, but, when I see the photographs and read stories of thousand of men, women and children we are able to help, I can not stop praying to Allah (swt) to extend the hours in a day from 24 to probably 30-34.
And brilliant thing is that, when I was in 4/5th class I use to walk 2/3 miles to a primary school in a neighbouring village. Until 2002 there was no school in the village, when we started a home school that has now developed to a proper primary school with 200 children. We have just completed a beautiful school building consisting of 12 rooms, including library, science lab, compute room. Last week when I received a phone call from our Pakistan office informing me of the completion fo the building, it was so brilliant it just broke down into tears. We are not only providing to (over 95%) children free education, books, clothes, and healthcare but also helping their parents to improve their economic situation.
Please visit our website www.islamicaid.org.uk and my profile http://members.lycos.co.uk/mahmood151090/. The profile appeared in December issue of Third Sector.
NOTE: We are desperately looking for someone on freelance/contract/part-time basis, with expertise in database systems, SQL, VB, ASP, .NET, web technology, e-marketing etc to help us utilise ICT to its fullest potential.

Ahhh heres a question for you Phoneixdesi: Where can URS or any other major Civil engineering firm such as Bechtel use an MBA+Civil Engineer? And what sort of salary level do people come into these companies and where do they top off and how long does it take to get there?

URS and Becthel, both, are pretty large organizations with over 30,000 people and a lot of areas to chose from. So I believe that you should be able to find a lot of positions that would suit your background.
With your background, I guess the key would be your experience. If some one has MBA plus engineering degree, ideally, we would like to place him as a business development manager who can either identify new business areas and develop solid client ship in those areas or generate more business in one of our established areas of business. Obviously, in order to fit into such roles, the key would be your experience as a business development manager. I am talking about a solid experience of at least 15 years. For such positions MBA/Engineering is considered to be an ideal match and extremely lucrative packages are being offered to talented candidates with solid bonuses and stock options. With 12-15 years of relevant background and a proven track record of business development, one should expect a base salary of 120,000 to 150,000 plus 100,000 dollars for bonus and stock options. But let me remind you that you will be part of an extremely challenging consulting world where you have to develop the business opportunities and generate business or a pink slip would be inevitable. However, if successful, these positions would place you in an ideal position to be a CEO or President of an engineering firm.
Now on the other hand, if you have 3 to 7 years of experience as an engineer and now you have also acquired an MBA degree, please do not accept any major change in your career within these companies. If you do not like engineering anymore, I would recommend looking into regular MBA jobs.
