PCB hold discussions with Intikhab for NCA director’s post
KANDY: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also got in touch with former Test captain and coach Intikhab Alam as a part of the process to appoint a director to reorganise its National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore.
According to the details, after holding talks with former opener Mudassar Nazar, the PCB is now also looking at Intikhab as a strong candidate to take over as the NCA director later this month so that it can start functioning in May.
A source close to the Board confirmed the discussions had been held with Intikhab while he was in Chandigarh, India coaching the Punjab team there. “He is expected to be back soon or might have already returned. The Board is hoping to have final talks with him to find out if he is the right candidate for the director’s post. Mudassar is also a candidate and has already held several discussions with the PCB Director Cricket Operations Saleem Altaf,” the source said.
Intikhab enjoyed rare success with the Indian Punjab team when he coached them to the Ranji Trophy final in 2004 but this season even his presence could not prevent them from falling to the bottom of the table.
Intikhab, who has remained manager and coach of the Pakistan senior team, also runs his own academy in Muridke close to Lahore.
The Board is due to appoint a director and six coaches for the NCA which the PCB wants to reorganise to make it more productive.
The Board has even appointed a husband and wife team of trainer/physiotherapist from South Africa at the academy.
The source said Waqar Younis, who is attached with the Pakistan team as bowling coach, would head the bowling department at the NCA.

Re: Intikhab Alam - being also considered for NCA
Why can't they introduce some fresh faces who can introduce new ideas and concepts? I know Intikhab Alam has been the previous coach of Pakistan and is presently coaching the Indian Punjab side and has lots of coaching experience. However, when he was coach of Pakistan – the team had some great players and a captain leading the side.
For example the 92 World cup winning team had Imran Khan as the team captain, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram etc who were very good cricketing brains and their experience and talent contributed a lot to the teams success. It was the individual performances and the captain which was responsible for success – rather then Intikhab Alams coaching.
If Intikhab Alam was the present coach of the side I doubt very much he would enjoy the same success simply because he doesn’t have the captain and the players to work with.
Apart from playing international cricket and experience of coaching, what other special abilities / qualities or qualifications does Intikham Alam or Mudassar Nazar have? Do they know anything about the use of technology, biomechanics, sports science etc which modern cricket coach’s are expected to have knowledge of these days?
Both are not qualified coach’s and the academy directors of other nations are fully trained professional coaches.
I know Intikhab Alam has been coaching at the Lahore Cricket Academy – but do they follow the same type of syllabus which is taught by other academies around the world or which will be followed by the NCA? what players have come through from this academy??
Also, it seems to me that Saleem Altaf is leading the hunt for this post on his own and also responsible for interviewing the candidates. Why can’t they have a panel of experts to interview each candidate rather then relying on one person who could be biased towards one individual even though he may not be suitable for the position?
