In an unprecedented move in Indian domestic cricket, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has appointed Intikhab Alam, the former Pakistan captain and coach, as coach-cum-manager of its Ranji Trophy team for the coming season. Intikhab, 62, will replace Bhupinder Singh senior, the former Indian medium-pacer, who was in charge of the side for more than six years.

Intikhab will become the first foreigner to coach any Indian domestic team. He had a very successful time coaching Pakistan, with the World Cup victory in 1992 the glittering highlight.

Intikhab has been appointed for a one-year term, beginning in September. The PCA confirmed that they have put in a request to the Indian board about the appointment. The Indian Express reported that Intikhab was extremely pleased about the appointment, and quoted him as saying: “IS Bindra [the PCA president] approached me during the India-Pakistan series. I thought about it for three weeks before realising this was a challenge I couldn’t pass up.”

Intikhab felt that the Indian domestic structure was better than its Pakistan counterpart, as “You don’t have institutions or banks involved.”

Jagmohan Dalmiya, the BCCI president, did not foresee any problems with this appointment. “We have no problem with it. In fact, Punjab cricketers would benefit from Alam’s experience since he speaks Punjabi so well and was also born in Indian Punjab.”

And Intikhab also didn’t think there would be any problems communicating with the players, and added, “I don’t think there will be any cultural or language problems because I was born in Hoshiarpur, I speak the language.”

Kudos to Bindra & Intekhab. :k:

I have no problems with a Pakistani being a coach in the Indian domestic circuit nor do I have any reason to suspect that Inthikab will not be a good coach........HOWEVER, I am wondering if there was any need to look outside of India for a coach(especially for a state team)... there are plenty of ex-players in India of equal or more calibre than Inthikab...who would have gladly accepted the job...PCA's chief is obviously a SARDAR !

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Former Pakistan captain Intikhab Alam is set to become the first foreigner to coach a domestic Indian team.

Former Ranji Trophy national champions Punjab have announced Alam will be their full-time coach next season, subject to visa clearance.

Alam, 62, told the Indian Express newspaper on Saturday he was enthusiastic about the forthcoming assignment.

“I don’t think there will be any cultural or language problem,” Alam was quoted as saying.

“I thought about it (taking up the assignment) for three weeks before realising this was a challenge I couldn’t pass up.”

A former leg-spinning all-rounder, Alam was born in India before the partition of the two countries, and speaks the same language as his new team’s players.

“I have not spoken to any former player like Bishan Bedi about it yet,” said Alam, who coached the Pakistan team that triumphed in the 1992 World Cup in Australia.

Alam, whose contract runs from September to March next year, will hope to resurrect the fortunes of the northern Indian state side, who won their only Ranji title in 1992-1993.

Punjab’s dashing left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh and successful off-spinner Harbhajan Singh are regular members of the Indian team.

Dinesh Mongia, who was part of the team that made the final of last year’s World Cup in South Africa, is the state’s current captain.

Alam, who led Pakistan in 17 Test matches, played a total of 47 Tests between 1959 and 1977, scoring 1,493 runs and picking up 125 wickets. He also played four one-day internationals.

Finally there is a hope for Indian Cricket :hehe:

Doesnt people give same arguement against John Wright. Why John Wright when we have more able person in India?.

Answe is simple.. New perspective, New idea and a person not involve local politics.

Sorry , point not taken...

(1) An International team is not the same thing as a state team.

(2) Pakistanis are just as much "deshis" as Indians and culturally similar...so you can throw your "fresh ideas theory" out of the window.
Inthikab was even born in India, for God's sake.

(3) Inthikab has been a mediocre coach. Pakis won the World Cup under him not because of his brilliant coaching but individual player performances.
If it was Akram for instance, I can see how he could have helped the Punjab team better than any Indian ex-player could...but Inthikab...sorry he doesn't quite cut it.

Deosnt matter if he is DESI or not. Point is that he was never part of Ranji setup so he can bring new perspective. And may be he is cheaper, who knows.
And then come the poltics point.
