Ever have a situation where you went for an interview and just knew that you didnot want that job. how did you handle it differently than regular interviews, did you feel any different, more at ease, did you try to get the offer?
I have had different experiences with mine, in one case I made an excellent impression, ithas been over a year and the recruioter for that company still stays in touych with me to see if I want to move over.
The second one, I terminated the interview process by telling them that I dont think the role is the right match and respect their time and would like to let them know sooner rather than latter so they can focus on other candidates. The hiring manager appreciated it. but one of the peers I was interviewing with around the time I made my decision to not continue was like a hardass in the interview and I pushed back quite strongly, not sure if I would have done that if I really wanted that job. Details later
Re: INterview where you knew you did not want the job
What you did was indeed honest, however, the more interviews you're exposed to, the better groomed you are for the one around the corner. I'd rather complete the interview and then let them know. Knowing that the job is not for you makes you a bit more comfortable since you have nothing to loose but the time you had already set aside for it. I am sure the interviewers would have done the same and would only gain from interviewing you.
Re: INterview where you knew you did not want the job
Hypnotix in the case of the company where I backed out it was disney in california. the relocation package, compensation and the role simply were not where I wanted them to be to move. the next step would have been for them to fly me to have an in person interview again with the team, but according to the recruiter they dont fly anyone in unless they are extremely serious and just want to meet before making an offer. i.e. by that time they have decided to extend an offer.
I did not tell them mid interview, but after the interviews had ended and before we talked about next steps. just did not seem right to fly in for a job that i did not even want.
teh last interview with one of the peers for that role was rather interesting, probably among the most unprofessional people who had interviewed me. would write details about it later.
Re: INterview where you knew you did not want the job
begs the question, why the hell are you interviewing if you didn't want the job in the first place?
Let me further explain,
You dont always know about the copensation package, reolcation package, benefits, any perks like deferred comp, stock options. You dont fully know the culture of the team or the approach of the personality you will be working for and people you will be working with, specific challenges, budgets, targets goals.
Have you never turned down job offers? You were in the hiring process but decided not to proceed when the offer was made. If you decided this is not for you because you realized it in the middle of an interview or series of interviews, thats what this thread is about.
Re: INterview where you knew you did not want the job
I was in a similar situation a few months ago, X2. Got an offer with a company but knew I would be turning it down from the very beginning...just the testing the waters. I felt really confident during the interview process, no butterflies in the tummy, no pressure...I found myself talking through the interview smoothly and surely, all because I knew I was going to say no if I got the offer.
When they did call me with the offer, I asked for a few days to think because suddenly I felt I had wasted their time...
Then I politely came up with an excuse like "got another offer" deal.
Life is great when there's no pressure biting you to make decisions.

I had my fair share of this very experience today... so now I see where you're coming from.
