What are interviewers NOT allowed to ask a candidate?
I was under the impression that asking about religion/race was against the law..Others, I’m not so sure about.
One interviewer asked point blank what my “family situation” was because they didn’t want someone who had children (because it could affect their attendance/quality of work)
Another said “oh that job must have involved alot of exercise” and was skeptical (and this was for an office job :o )
this stupid woman made a crack about my eyes… :o
are these questions/comments even allowed? or are they just being really sneaky? and how do we avoid these kind of silly questions
I mean no one would ask you a direct question such as '' Do you have or plan to have children? '' - there is always a way for turning litigious questions into harmless, legal alternatives before asking ...
Like in the above scenario - they might ask '' Are you available to work overtime on occasion or Can you travel ? '' - and this will get them the feedback they are looking for , but in a way that it looks like building a friendly rapport with the candidate ....
A lot of companies train their HR folks to not ask questions on family situation, religion, political beliefs to avoid any potential jhamelas in future. I think this is true for most big companies, but smaller firms may get away with these type of questions.
