hey guys

so some advice on dos and donts of a skype interview

im fine with content

i need advice on how to articulate and convey my thoughts better. how to speak clearly and how to make a connection and of course leave an impression

  1. Dress Up like you would for a one on one interview.
  2. Sit in a well lit, but quite room.
  3. Sit at a place where you have a blank wall behind you. You should not have an open window or another light source behind you.
  4. Test all the equipment (speakers, internet connection, headset) ahead of time.
  5. Have a notepad by your side to write down questions.
  6. Have your cell phone in quite mode, next to you just in case your audio stops working (happened with me recently).
  7. Have a bottle of water next to you to take a sip if your throats get dry.
  8. Have a relaxed but professional body tone.
  9. Ask the interviewer if he/she can see you and hear you correctly.

TLK covered majority of the important points . Just to add a few more :

  • Practice your sitting posture ( if you turn on the camera setting and see if you seem slouched or sitting attentively , it will give you an idea of how you want to come across ) . Body language is extremely essential in video interviews. Please also ensure that the interview doesnt only see your face in the video but is able to see you jot down points ( you want to seem interested and this does count towards body language )

  • Jot down all potential points you want to cover in the interview and ensure you go through them well before the interview. The points should be regards your achievements, why you would like the role, about the company etc .. This is so you wont feel pressured to think on the spot .

  • Ensure the interviewer finishes what they are saying before you respond to them. Its important coz you dont want to be talking at the same time as them .

  • Jot down all questions you may have and make sure you ask them at the end of the interview.

  • Ensure no one one disturbs you in the room , during the interview.

  • Ensure the Laptop /Comp is on full battery , you don't want to be running around if you realize halfway through the interview that your machine is low on battery.

  • If the call disconnects for any reason , connect the call again from your end , don't feel embarrassed about it at all.

Last but not the least , relax and enjoy the interview. Skype interviews can be much less daunting then the actual face to face interviews :) All the best
