Internet

This topic branches off from the discussion we were having at the guppy meet about Internet itself being a whole squemish taboo.

It can be used for both good and bad like all technology. I’ve noticed a trend in our Desi society where parents ban their kids from going on the net too often because of the horrible stories they’ve heard about relations going sour, murders, sexual assaults, and kidnaps.

You know what they say, the bad news spreads farther than the good.

I can bet 3 out of 5 members or users here close their window while browsing Gupshup or the net when their immediate or distant relative comes by. I’m sure some here can relate to what is being said here.

Kids, and young adults stay busy on the net instead of being out on the streets possibly doing drugs or breaking the law.

No parent wants their child to be obsessed with the net and neither do they want them surfing on it. Why? Whats so wrong? Its not all about porn and cybersex.

What gives? Why make it such a big issue out of nothing?

its not a big issue , all parents r doing is protecting their kids from what they hear or seen.. like u said bad news spreads faster then good news.. so if u put ur self in their shoes i guess u can understand where they r coming from.

Why is it not a big issue? Protection from what? Perhaps, I don't understand it or there are some who are frustrated and want to relate to those in the same situation. Some might have ideas for a middle ground to make their parents understand rather than hide this as if they're doing something bad.

protection from whatever bad n evil that comes along with internet...not all people u chat with are reliable.. for all u know they might be at prison or something.. or whatever internet site u r browsing is giving out positive messages to kids.. see we all like to believe that it can never happen to us UNTIL it does. so parents just take precautions ..thats all.

I agree Suroor, parents are just being cautious of some of the negative aspects of the internet. For younger children, they should implement some sort of cencoring program to filter out the pornography from their searches, etc. I guess it wouldn't work for anyone older or who is somewhat technically inclined since they would find ways to shut it off or find ways around it. Communication is the key. Parents should talk to their kids and make them aware of certain situations that go on in chat rooms for instance.

thats true, and to a degree i agree with it, however i have heard of some severe cases where parents have cut off the net completely

it all stems from the relationship kids have with their parents, its different for every situation i guess

My folks would never let me go on a “guppie meet”…but it’s no different than walking into a room and making new friends…and yeah…that part about closing the window everytime someoen walks in…I do that all teh time. :k:

yeah there's people like me out there. protect your kids. booooo
I actually have met people (from AOL) and some were really scary.

Well I would say that protection is good to a limit but if u become over protective then kids would betray you. The only thing parents should do it tell diff b/w good and bad, thats all then its kids job to take responsiblity of their deeds. Parents should guide them but also give them some space to grow in and learn and exp things on their own.

Indeed! For children but also for adults, the important thing to know is that there are some very sick people out there on the internet. If you're not careful in getting to know the real them, you can get yourself in serious hot water with these losers. However, if these malicious individuals are known, you can easily report them via the legal system as long as you stay persistent.
