Internet safety and parental control

Hi,

I have seen a few questions regrading monitoring and controlling usage of the internet at home and blocking unwanted sites. There are a few different ways to it. One is to block the wrong sites from showing up e.g. DNS filtering. The following site does just that:

OpenDNS > Use OpenDNS

All you have to do is set your computer to point to OpenDNS IPs to resolve internet sites and you would be all set.

Another option is to install and configure software on your computer. This not only stops unwanted sites from popping up but also lets you control what software to let kids use and for how long. Here’s a free Internet security software for home use:

K9 Web Protection - Free Internet Filtering and Parental Controls Software

“Blue Coat® K9 Web Protection is a content filtering solution for your home computer. Its job is to provide you with a family-safe Internet experience, where YOU control the Internet content that enters your home. K9 Web Protection implements the same enterprise-class Web filtering technology used by Blue Coat’s Fortune 500 customers around the world, wrapped in simple, friendly, and reliable software for your Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista computer.”

There are tons of other paid and unpaid services out there which I’m sure you can google. Try the following search terms:

  • parental controls, monitoring etc
  • internet nanny
  • computer usage restrictions

Please feel free to post question that you may have regarding this issue.

Re: Internet safety and parental control

saeed, what browser do you use? In Firefox anything you download automatically goes to the desktop (which would be on the 10 gb C: drive). You can click on Tools/Options, under the Main tab, you can specify for it to ask you where to save the download when it starts and not automatically put it where it wants. Hope this helps

Regarding computer security, have you ever tried, or know anyone who has tried the new iPrism 6.4? I saw it won the Technology and Learning Award, and has the lowest TCO (according to WindowsITPro).
