Internet/Mobile Services in Pakistan

Hi guys,

I’m travelling to Karachi in two weeks from London and I’m trying to figure out the best route for mobile internet/broadband. Our house there does not have a phone line so I guess BB is kinda out of the question.

I will be taking an iPhone 4s and Blackberry with me, but I am purely taking the iphone to use at home(games, apps etc…) while the blackberry will be my actual phone I use out and about.

I need to be able to call and message/whatsapp some friends (on their mobiles) back home on a regular basis. What is the best way to do this? I’m more concerned about calling than messaging as some of the research I’ve done showing a cost of 20Rps per min!

I’m not totally sure I’m making sense, but I guess in essense my question is what’s the best way to get connected to the internet as well as the cheapest way to call UK mobiles in Karachi.

Thanks!

Re: Internet/Mobile Services in Pakistan

For mobile internet services get a telenor connection for 500 rupees per month (all other providers have the same rate but telenor’s edge services are pretty good)

For a usb broadband type service, go for PTCL wifi evo cloud. Very handy and good coverage.

Re: Internet/Mobile Services in Pakistan

thanks for that seb, will look in to telenor

Regarding the wifi, it does seem pricey as I am only in karachi for two weeks; from what I can see there is a minimum contract length (which I can’t actually see specified).

Re: Internet/Mobile Services in Pakistan

I’ll suggest to keep iPhone and BB in UK, and for Pakistan buy a very ordinary phone with you . I lost my new phone on gun point . Better be safe than sorry .

lost phone on gun point…so sad

mujhe abhi tak apni ankho par yaqin nahi ho raha hai

Re: Internet/Mobile Services in Pakistan

You don’t have to be like a prisoner and not take your good stuff with you if you really wanted too.

Like I mean I know people take things away on Gunpoint but, dont you have to be a bit more cautious and not use it a lot outside IF you know those type of things happen there…

I’ve seen lots of people with phones over 60000 RS, and not have been at the Gunpoint stage, Maybe you might have not been in the right place at the right time or usually they take it from you at nght times…

Re: Internet/Mobile Services in Pakistan

I think you will get a Prepaid SIM.

Then get Ufone Monthly Subscription.

1.5GB data for 500PKRS + Tax ~ 800 PKRS

The next economical option in Zong. Although they don’t have good network signals everywhere.
~2GB data for 200 + Tax ~ 350 PKRS

Then there are many other plans but depending upon your need.
