Internet Diet

For some it’s just a tool of communication used on a necessity basis. For others it is a hobby, a passion, and in some cases with recent generation (like myself) an addiction that is hard to let go of.

Internet is the new Television set of the family. Should your internet be taken away, could you survive without it? Or do you feel cut off without internet? Have you ever considered going on a deliberate internet-diet for a time?

How do you see the current generation and the next one in terms of utilizing internet and relevant technologies that use internet?

Personally, i think internet will if it hasn’t already, replace the television to a point where if you’re not sleeping, you’re internetting. There are many who even study online i.e. Distant learning/Online schools, etc.

Are you able to go on a successful internet diet? And for how long?..

Re: Internet Diet

It all boils down to the user intentions. IF a person is using it for entertainment only then of course over usage is not healthy; and it merits a DIET/time off from net to interact with REAL world and society.
I use it mostly for work so I can't avoid it.

Re: Internet Diet

Okay, so what of others who often bring their work home and use internet even while at home. Are change in habits necessary for everyone that overdoes it? Or is it okay to maximize the utility as long as it is for some "justifiable"(sorry for the lack of a better word) reasons.

Will it be possible to completely withdraw from using internet in the foreseeable future? Altogether, work/home/communication/etc... a complete blackout if you will, again deliberately or of no choice.

Re: Internet Diet

^ the same rule applies to home office workers. There should be a some time off; let it be as taking short breaks or not working for few days. UNFORTUNATELY avoiding it/withdrawing from it's usage is not possible in today's world. Even when you are not connected via PC you are connected to it via blackberry and other means. So in short if your work depends on it then you don't have much of a chioce.
The key element here is trying to find a right balance which suites your work needs and social life.

Re: Internet Diet

I think its unrealistic to think one can go on an internet diet per se as most of our daily living is centered around the internet now ; so if its not browsing , watching movies , chatting then its distance learning , reading (ebooks have replaced paperbacks ) , paying your bills , banking and working as most jobs require some amount of networking whether its a doctor or an engineer etc.

**However going on a particular "site-centered" diet is something well within one's control and requires will-power like any other diet ! **
I've myself tried internet "dietting " when I 've found myself getting addicted to things like taking a sabbatical from gupshup for example that lasted well over 6 months and I only came back at the request of someone whom I could not turn down otherwise it probably would have been longer!

Re: Internet Diet

I use the internet for: email, GS (has become a daily routine :bummer:), banking, movies, catching up on dramas.. and generally surfing for information. No I’d never be able to go on an internet diet.. although, I’ve often cut down on the time I spend on the internet if I have other things to do..

Re: Internet Diet

Today, no one can live without internet. But I think its a way too much spending all the time on the internet and that way, most people forget their prayers. Nowadays, lot of death happens, and that's because of Internet - interacting with new people makes the biggest problem. In short, internet has lot of advantages but more disadvantages too. I think I'm right
